Thank you, Coopa.
Your answers are very helpful and appreciated. The site you listed looks especially good-I cant wait to have some time to sit and read on it. I am planning to purchase Sigrid Van Dort's book because it has come highly recommended by a number of people and since I am truly a visual person I think the photos will be great(I know the cost is up there so I am budgeting for it). Does anyone here have any other suggestions on some good genetic sites or books that I can read? I am glad to know that I am not the only one that has problems with the chicken calculator.
Thanks again!

I'd like everyone to meet "Ander".

I've been wanting to introduce him but have just recently (today) decided on his name. Ander is a Greek word for Warrior. I may have gotten a little carried away on the name but this little guy has a special place in my heart. (My husband my his dad still prefer to call him "bonehead"

He is a cochin, and has been a fighter since day 1.

When I first got him he appeared to have a huge sore on his head. I had no idea where it came from or what caused it. But my husband would say "you cannot keep him, he will die". I was determined that he would make it. The spot became a target for awhile to his brothers and sisters. The brown patch that was bumped up didn't seem to hurt him so I kept close watch. He got scabs on it at times but it never seemed to phase him much.

He is about a month old now and that big brown, scabbed spot is now a pink color and starting to get nice feathers around it. I'm unsure if he will ever grow feathers on whatever it is, but he is doing wonderful! The spot is raised up still as if whatever it is, he was born with. But it is healed on the outside almost completely. His coloring is much different from anything I have and his feathers are still a little awkward so I have no clue what he will look like but today he is a very active boy!

Take THAT hubby! lol

Anyone have any ideas on what he may look like??

Is there anyone in Maine that has Cochin hatching eggs for sale? We had to cull my 6 year old son's little Dragon. He was a mottled Cochin and we have been looking for more. We have 1 little partridge that we just love named Daisy. Our little Dragon just stopped walking and he was starting to waste away because he couldn't get to his food. My son cried and I told him we would look for more.
I'd like to get eggs locally cause I don't have a paypal and not interested in getting one. I've had bad experiences with it.

Thanks

Here's another good website by Brian Reeder:
http://poultrygenetics.bravehost.com/
I also highly recommend Reeder's book, Intro to the Color Forms of Domestic Fowl. There are no pictures, but it is laid out very well and easy to understand. I actually find that it and vanDort's book work well together, and I use both equally.

Another one that I have is Grant Brereton's 21st Century Poultry Breeding.

Both Reeder's and Brereton's books are usually available on Amazon and cost around $15-$30 each.
