Cockerel crowing throughout the night

We have a young cockerel that has just recently started crowing. Last night he crowed at 2:45, 5:00, and again at 7:00. We have a couple of heat lamp in the coop. I am wondering if that is why and he is thinking it is daylight?

That’s a possibility. Why don’t you try the ceramic reptile lights that do not give off light but still give off heat? I would be afraid to keep the lights on in the coop. It must be cold where you are.

Nope, they crow for all kinds of reasons... they saw a rat or maybe a predator, the neighbor started their car, or head lights flashed past, I clanged silverware in the drawer... etc.

I'm sure the heat lamps aren't helping with the crowing, but they are not likely the cause.

Any disturbance can cause crowing during the night. What are your ambient temperatures ? Under most conditions a dry, draft free coop are all that chickens need. Providing heat can cause more problems than it eliminates.

It’s really not cold where we live. It has dipped below 30. My husband thinks they will be cold. We are going to shut it off and see if it helps with the crowing. Also going to try the ceramic lamps! Thanks for the advice!

Ask your husband to put on a down jacket and sit under a heat lamp.

I value and respect that folks don't want their birds cold! But they are well equipped once feathered, usually by 8 weeks.

If they are fully feathered 30 is NOT cold. When they sit on the roost their feathers also cover their feet and they can tuck heads under the wing.

I use the ceramic lamps in my house and for raising chicks... honestly... they do not put out the same amount of heat even if they are the same wattage. Worse part is you can't tell if they are working or not unless you put your hand under to feel them. If you guys feel the need for heat.. maybe consider a sweeter heater type?? But it can make it harder for them to adjust to daytime temps outside.

It’s normal, I have 4 roosters they all start crowing at 3:00am and stop at 7:00am. I have no lamp or heat in their coop.

We live in WA State! We were originally from WI.....so I think he still feels the temps our families are getting! LOL! Thanks for the replies!

It gets below 30 all the time at night where we are, we have no lamp or heat in our coop and our chickens are fine. Chickens when they get cold they all sleep on the top roost and snuggle together to keep each other warm

Decided to not get ceramic lamps for now! But It’s supposed to get down to 15 deg at the end of the week! Is this too cold?
