We don’t man the hives but we rent space to a keeper that gives us honey in return for access to our non-pesticide land. He is getting ready to retire, and hub & I want to buy his equipment when he goes. We’ve been spoiled with the good stuff for way too long! Good luck, fresh honey is like nothing else!
My pick up date was originally May 6th, but they pushed it back a week, due to the cold temps. I'm getting a nuc, as it's easier to install the bees. A bit more expensive, but hey, it's my first batch, so easy is worth an extra $40.

Most people won't know what a "nuc" is, so I'll explain. It's pronounced, "nuke," as it's short for nucleus colony. You get a small colony of bees on their own frames, with a mated queen who is already laying eggs, and there's brood (young bees in various stages of development).

How many bees in a "small" colony? Oh, 10-15. Thousand. :lau Yeah, I  the first time I read that.

My daughter got herself set up a few years ago. And a bear came along and destroyed *everything* within a week. :(

The apiary was kind enough to give her another nuc, and the bear came back to finish the job...

That's horrible. I'm sorry to hear that. A black bear has been sighted a few counties away, but I haven't heard of any sightings closer.

Yesterday I was leveling the "bee spot" and jockeying cinder blocks around. My back is sore.

Cinder blocks, the bane of my back too! And every other part of my body, even some I didn't know I had!

I keep looking outside and looking at all the mess from over-winter, and procrastinating on cleaning it up...
