penny -- My sympathies on the roof noise. We had our flat tar/gravel roof removed and a new membrane roof put on. For two weeks it sounded like moose were doing zumba on the roof. They even brought their own music.
The funniest thing was when they were replacing the skylights and one of them looked down into the kitchen and proclaimed to the others "Hey! She's making popcorn!"
