@Shadrach I didn't know you were a charter member of the what doesn't hurt doesn't work club also!
I didn't volunteer for it! I can't complain. Compared to many of my age and level of life abuse I do very well. My theory is if I keep away from people I'll stagger on for a bit.:p

That's really too bad. Finally get a good one and can't keep her.
In general the health care here is good; better than the UK imo. I'm lucky in that I now have a full health card for the Catalonian health care system. I've been very fit most of my life. Now at almost 65 things I would have brushed off a decade ago take a lot more work.

Good morning, Club. Thanks for the coffee, IM and Shad. I'll need it as I agreed to go to work today to work on finishing up a wiring harness I started.

I already posted this at the other coffee shop but had to brag up my former boy a little here too! :love I always liked him and toyed seriously with keeping a third male but common sense always prevails with me and I let him go. He's not yet 7 months old...

Hi Tonya, just wanted to tell you that Sarge is a hero.. We had a hawk fly into the chicken coop last Sunday. (never in our 9 years having chickens has this ever happened) Sarge and our Olive fought off the hawk in the coop so the other girls could hide. Art ran into the coop and was able to grab the hawk and throw it outside. Unfortunately the hawk killed our Olive. She was the new head hen and we miss her very much but Sarge was able to save the other girls. He had no injuries. We looked him all over. The other girls are fine as well. We are very grateful that Sarge was here and can't imagine what could have happened to the other girls if we didn't have him.

Good for Sarge, although I think the senior hen who died probably saved the others.
How did a hawk get into the coop?

Could be. But Sarge did attack it.
They have an open top run and the man door to the coop was open.

I get called cynical when I mention this.
I very rarely have a rooster take on a hawk before a strike. What happens is the hawk makes the strike and the rooster sees some strange dude on top of one of his hens. That's what makes them attack. Imo it's not so much about protecting the hen from the hawk but about not wanting anything/anybody mating with her. It's the same response some humans get when they pick up one of a roosters hens.
On those occasions where a rooster looks as if he has been fighting a hawk it's usually because once he's given the warning call and his hens have scattered he's still out in the open and the hawk diverts it's strike to the rooster.
I would love to believe roosters were knights in shining armour and all that but they are a bit brighter than the average knight ime.:p
