I have had my alpha rooster herd the hens into a corner near the coop when a hawk flies over and he and a 'lieutenant' will take up post between them and the perceived danger. They will both be standing on their toes, heads in the air, screaming their lungs out. At that moment, watching them I don't doubt that they would go after a threat to keep their harem safe.

I once had a little buff Cochin bantam rooster and a little mixed bantam hen named Maxine. Maxine always had a line of chicks following her with Red, the Cochin in attendance. One day I had them in the yard and Red 'thought' he saw a bird bigger than him....just about every bird in existence....and let out a yell for Maxy to take cover. She immediately called her chicks to her, got them all under her, flattened herself out like a pancake and tucked her head under while Red stood guard over her.

That little hen would have sacrificed herself for her babies. There was no cover other than her underside and wings. Some 50 years later and I still miss Red and Maxy.
The bravery of broody mums always leaves me gobsmacked. I've had a couple of roosters here that have died while undoubtedly protecting their hens. You can tell a lot from the type of wounds and their position.

microchick what a beautiful love story to hear on Valentine's Day. got a Valentine's Card from my sister days ago. But that doesn't count - I mean it's my sister.

I sent Charlie Brown a card and signed in "little red haired girl." To lift his spirits. He was supposed to respond with a card signed "Bradley Cooper." I got nothing.

-18 here this morning when I forced myself out of bed
Really?! Wind chill or air temp.
Brrrrr!

Was in the teens here but sunny and no wind most the afternoon.
Plummeting tonight to about 6°F with a 'feels like' of below zero.

Beeee uuuuu tiful, Cap. I love the colors.

I worked on my quilt yesterday and may work on it a bit today. Since I hand quilt my fingers are a bit sore today. I'm trying to get the hang of using a thimble but my arthritis deformed fingers aren't co-operating with me. So it leaves me with needle sticks....lots and lots of needle sticks.
Thanks! I hand quilt too. Have you seen the finger tip protectors made of leather? Some even have a small circle of metal attached. Try those.
