I love the Chock Full 'O Nuts original or columbian roast. They don't have it over here in the middle of the ocean so I had a friend from New york send me some, and a week later my mother said they started selling it at Safeway back home (nevada)
We drink different coffee beans all the time. One of my husband's hobbies is buying green coffee beans and roasting them himself. I tend to like Mexican shade grown organic from the Oaxaca region the best. I like the natural chocolate flavor that the beans have. That's been harder to come by the last year, so we've been drinking a lot of varieties from Costa Rica lately. I don't like a really dark roast, but it depends on the bean.
Sometimes I like to do iced coffee, coffee shakes or add flavorings, too. Usually, though, I don't put a lot of different stuff in my coffee. Just this morning, I was thinking I should bake a chocolate cake and frost it with coffee frosting. Mmm... Coffee frosting would be good on a cake brownie, too.
We buy Maxwell House, any variety except the Dark, but we mix it with Eight O'Clock Coffee in original or Columbian. Seems to be a good pairing and cheaper than the others you grind in the store. What we like and what we can afford are sometimes two very different things. What we hate is the Ingles brand coffee, their "Laura Lynn" line. Tastes like wood chips.
There's only so far we'll stoop before we just don't drink coffee at all, LOL.
A friend of ours provides us coffee beans he roasts himself, from the Oaxaca region of Mexico. Deep rich coffee flavor, aroma enough to make someone swoon...I hope I'll have this coffee provided for us forever. I grind a week's supply at a time and keep the beans in the refrig until I need them. Love getting up in the morning just because of the hot coffee! ~G
I just got a Keurig coffee maker that came with a variety pack, so I'm still experimenting with which ones I like. I know I do not like the "bold" ones of any brand, I prefer a more mild coffee. If I go to a convenience store with a variety to choose from, I usually like the Colombian Supremo best. I also like some flavored coffees. Green Mountain makes some interesting flavored ones that I like.
I have a story about Starbuck's coffee. I absolutely HATE Starbuck's, I find it grossly strong and just horrible. Even their mild version is too strong. My best friend works at Starbuck's and gets stuff free. A while back she came to visit and brought me a bag of Starbuck's. I didn't want to hurt her feelings, so I thanked her and stuck it in the pantry and continued to drink my usual brand. I've always said that it tastes like it got left on the burner too long; it just tastes horribly burnt to me. At the time I was living with my boyfriend, and several weeks had passed and one morning I was in bed very tired and asked him to brew some coffee. He didn't usually brew coffee, but he went out and started to brew some for me. A little while later, I was still in bed, many rooms away from the kitchen, when I smelled something awful. I called my boyfriend into the room and said "What's burning? Do you smell that?!" and he said he didn't smell anything. I was slightly alarmed and said, "No, really, something electrical is burning, I can smell like a burning electrical cord or something!" He said, "All I smell is the coffee". I thought how silly, of course it isn't the coffee, it's DEFINITELY something electrical, like burning rubber. I got out of bed and started checking lamps, etc. and when I got to the kitchen I saw the bag of Starbuck's on the counter. He had just grabbed whatever coffee was in sight, which was the Starbuck's that I never even opened. I laughed so hard when I realized it WAS in fact the Starbuck's and not some smoldering appliance.
Needless to say, I dumped it and made some of my usual brand. Ever since then, when my friend says "Oh, what do you want me to bring you from Starbucks?" I say "TEA! Tea please!".
I'm with you, Laura. I HATE Starbucks coffee. We buy Maxwell house and I like it strong with flavored creamer. I am currently on a Peppermint Mocha kick.
