Coffee's ready...

Almost a year ago, I started into this chicken venture. It has been a wonderful learning experience. I have enjoyed it greatly. The problem I have is . . . . I want to hatch some chicks and NOT A SINGLE one of my 15 hens will go broody. The only one that even thinks about it - - - - is the one that I want to lay the eggs for me. However, she is more content stealing the golfballs and other chickens eggs than sitting her own clutch. She steals everyones eggs and then lays hers and then runs off to be with the flock !

SHE JUST DOESN'T get the sitting part of the equation.

SO HOW CRAZY IS THIS - - - I JUST advertised on craigslist that I want an OLD SITTING HEN ? ? ?

GOD - - I've LOST my mind in this chicken madness

That is funny, Math Ace. Maybe you should get a Silkie. They say those go broody all the time, and are good mothers.
It looks to me, with my untrained eye, that all of the eggs are developing. One of the Ameraucana eggs looked almost solid, and one of the smaller of the Plymouth Rock eggs had a lot less development, so we will see if that one makes it. I'm getting so excited - I know I'll be checking every hour later this week!

I did a bit of the naked potty training when we started. And he has two options, a little plastic potty, or the big one with one of those smaller seats on top. He usually uses that. I think that's what frustrates me the most. A few months ago, he didn't pee his pants. He had trouble with going #2 at first, but that is resolved and it's been over the past two months or so that he started not caring if he wet his pants. He gets so caught up in what he is doing, or he just doesn't think it's urgent and waits to long. I dunno, but thanks for all the advice. We'll get it figured out. And yes, I have all tile and wood floors except a few rugs, so that is good.

Rancher - I wish my grandfather were still around. He would have all kinds of excellent advice on fixing up an incubator. He was a tinkerer, and a master carpenter, and he raised White Leghorns for eggs. You made me think of him with that antique incubator. He would have loved helping fix up something like that. Good luck. It is very similar to the one at the science museum, and up until they moved the museum a few years ago, it worked great.
Those movies sound interesting, Oesdog, but I haven't seen either one.

I woke up with a sore back this morning from moving my massive desk. Today we are going to visit BF's parents a few hours away. Not my favorite activity, but it must be done sometimes.

Have a great day, and enjoy your coffee this morning. I'll be taking mine on the road shortly.

Math ace - I lost my mind to chicken madness too!!!!!!! I hope sooo much you manage to get a broody hen???? I would send you my Bertha if I could - she WONT STOP BEING BROODY!!!! I mean its soooo funny now cause she is STILL SITTING ON HER CHICKS!!!!!!!!!

Chicks - hope you have a good visit today - !!!! I only watched one Movie?????? Agora. - it was ok bit long and drawn out for the story but the history aspect was very interesting as I like all those period drama kind of things( Especially if they are based on true life stories!) - I also liked the Roman conection and have enjoyed visiting some wonderful ruins in Tunisia and Turkey over the years. Anyhow DH picked it so I just wondered if anyone else saw it. - It was a Spanish movie I think but I think the girl was played by the same one in the Mummy movies??? Could be wrong???? Anyhow as far as I know it got awards etc.

Glad there seems to be life in the eggs - when did you say they are due to hatch????

Your in TN so you shouldn't ahv a hard time keeping birds warm if you have a house for them to go into at night. each bird generates 10 watts of heat, so multiply that out and you can figure out how much heat the flock will generate. Chickens can deal with the cold better than the heat. The main thing is drafts, you don't want those. grease up combs to prevent freezing and feet as well. Lots of bedding on the floors, watch for humidity and dampness. That can be a death nell to birds. Respirotory illness. Better cold and dry than warm and wet.

The new Back Yard Poultry mag has lots of info on winter for chickens. Plus things to feed birds to help them generate body heat and keep them warm through the night. Nice recipes for evening treats. Plan ahead, get a system down and you should be ok. Plus FYI salmonella. I love this magazine.

Wishing everyone a safe winter
