Good Morning, all! Coffee is hot, and I've got a nice slow morning to enjoy it........

Yeah, Math Ace, Social Work seems to have the same effect on people's social lives. Sometimes you've just had enough of people. I'm taking it easy today and just hanging around here, doing a few little projects. I may go out and look for new yard furniture. A lot of it is no clearance now. I'm trying to spruce up my back yard a bit before I have my chicken swap the first weekend of November.

Tono - send some rain our way. It's getting really dry here - not good for the garden.
Annaraven - what types of chickens do you have? What is Buffy, the egg laying machine?

Is a Golden Comet similar to a Production Red? I was thinking yesterday how my PR just gets no recgonition around here. The Marans gets fawned over for her looks, the Barred Rock gets tons of attention because she is always talking to us and wanting to be pet, the EE's are silly, and the Leghorn is a Mama. The PR just does what she is supposed to, day in day out, almost never missing a single day of laying. She never pecks anyone - not even the new babies. Never scratches up the garden. Lets the kids pick her up without a fuss. She's not real bright, kind of a dull personality, but she sure is a good chicken! Props to the generic Productin Red, Matilda!!

Well, I think I'll get laundry going and fix some tasty eggs. Have a lovely Saturday!

Well the morning has flown through.

I seem to have more laundry than I know what to do with and my DS has just informend me he has another two bags for me tomorrow???? !!!!!!!!
He finds the Washer hard to understand and keeps ruining his clothes so better if I do them for him - though I would like him to have another washer at some point and try again to get the hang of it. I wont always be here to do it far him.

Anyhow I just put Jessy down for a wee nap so better make the best of the time. Were for a family Wedding reception tonight. My neice got married in Cypres after 7 yrs with her fellow so about time! My Neice is apparently wearing "The dress!" tonight so we better dress up to I guess!

It is lashing rain here and my stupid birds wont go in and its freezing cold too! They have not laid eggs in weeks even though I keep showing them the oven - Any ideas????????

Think I will grab a coffee while there is silence! - no baby crying!!

Hey. Everyone, if this cold doesn't kill me the stress from my kids will. Lord have mercy! This cold weather has got me down and the chickens are laying slightly better but they are straight layer and have lights on in the coop. A couple are laying on the floor and if I catch her she stew. lol

For those who don't know DD in tex is with child. She came home Columbus day to tell us. So far so good. God help her. She started to spot when she was here and freaked but she's ok and Doc says maybe it was the trip so she better stay in Tex. Lord I miss them.

Was going to cancel the ALBC conference, to go to AL to see GD's and SIL who's having her christian struggles , and DS who isn't saved and just a bunch of stuff, Pray for her, anyhow it's to late to cancel so I guess I'm going. Printed out the brochure. I hope I didn't waste my money. When I get to AL and I will , I'll have to find someone nearby who has chickens cuz GD keeps asking about Frenchy my friz bant. She's so cute. Lord bless her.

Had snow in NY already. Lord have mercy, where's this global warming. I NEED SOME SUNSHINE!

Baby Darcy is growing like a weed and cute as ever though she don't talk much.

Anyone here hatch during the winter? Anyone up north? Read a nice article about chickens in Alaska. $6 for doz pasture fed eggs? Still it's a lotta work keeping the poor things alive. I can't imagine it. I hope to start soon so I get early pullets. None of this fall starters for me, unless someone convinces me otherwise.

Well take care

Cat Water, the new Backyard poultry mag had a neat article on keeping chickens in the cold, did you see it? do all your chickens have all their toes? Anything special you do for your birds?

Ummmm, I am hatching as we speak ..... Delawares, of course. I cleaned out my storage garage (which has electricity), and plan to brood in there this winter. Last winter I used our attached garage, which is heated. I won't do that again, as it took me 2 days to clean out all the dust and dander. After these Delawares finish up hatching today I have nothing else incubating. What I do plan to incubate is the Heritage Barred Rocks (as soon as they start laying), and probably Icelandics and some English Orps. (Maybe more Delawares, too!) ..... Awwww, crap, I am a hatching addict!

Kathy: I didn't plan on the fall drop off in eggs and last year I was ok with eggs.

I tried a different feeding plan and that really bit the dust. At least I think that was why the girls molted so bad. Last year wasn't as bad.

Well anyhow I had a call for hens a short time back. Which was a surprise. '

Iv 'e an increase in egg orders so that has presented me with a problem. i sold 5 doz today but I've been saving to get that many. I only get 6 eggs/day. Not nearly enough.

They older girls are leaving as soon as I have replacement layers.

Did I mention my bant friz lays eggs that hve yolks as big as the one in a large store bought egg?

Tim,
My Delawares are about the only ones laying right now, even the ones that are molting. A week or so ago I changed things around, and made alot of moves. This has obviously stressed them, as most just quit laying. My Delawares did not move, but stayed in the same coop and run, so were not stressed. I am getting about 8 or 9 eggs out of those 10 girls a day.

I have a few Delaware eggs sitting here, and I think I may just go ahead and throw them in the bator.

A bantam laying a regular egg? Really now ..... hmmmm, and I always thought those little chickens were only good for chicken nuggets.
