Coffee's ready...

Good morning, all! I haven't been on this thread for months! Now that the holidays are over, I seem to have a little more time. DH made me coffee this morning, but I had to take the day off because he needs to get xrays of his hand and collarbone this afternoon. He slipped and fell on the ice on Saturday, and his hand has been swollen and purple, and painful. This winter has been extremely rough on us, and we are literally ready to pack up and move away! However, the kids love their school, so that's out of the question right now. I give us another 8 years in PA. So that gives me plenty of time to research an area that works for us.

math - I am sooo jealous - I see cabbages in the ground behind your brooder. Nice brooder, too! I wish I was handy like that.

I hope everybody is keeping warm, and safe! How many more weeks of this winter stuff do we have to put up with???

Come on down anytime, ChickyLaura! It's getting chilly today - down in the 50s. No ice to slip on, though. Hope hubby heals up quick!

I found this story this morning and thought it was funny. I posted it under Random Ramblings and mentioned Karma, and apparently I offended someone at the meer (sp?) mention of an eastern religious concept. I was just joking, and I do feel bad that the guy ended up dying. It's ironic a church-going preacher's daughter offended someone by mentioning a eastern religious tennent - I just think it's an interesting concept. Anyway, maybe you guys will appreciate it.....

Gotta get to work on some documentation. Have a lovely day, everyone!

I have 16 chicks in the house right now. . . . I won't be keeping them all. There are 5 cockerels that I plan on giving away in a few weeks.

I will be building another brooder in the next couple of weeks.
Someone is shipping me a half dozen eggs this weekened and 21 days from then I have more coming.
So, I will need another brooder.

I figure with as low as this is too the ground it can serve as a temporaray coop too.
I have two new runs almost complete. The brooder is very light. Dh and I can carry it all over the place with no problem.

WELCOME to the thread.
PA is Cooooold. Too Cold for me. We are having a high of 53 today and I am complaining. I tried to work outside this morning, but the wind was just slicing through me. So, I am bundle up inside and contemplating starting my taxes for 2010.

It has been a record setting winter this year OR the garden would be twice as tall and full. Those are red cabbages and collards. . . .
We had early fressing weather AND it hung around for over two weeks in November. .. . It killed or stunted so much of my fall plantings. Since, the weather has been so crazzzy. We got snow on Christmas day ( or the day after) which hasn't happened here in ohhhhhh over 10 years.

So, I am getting some seedlings started in the house and will see what spring brings me. . . . Usually, I would have so much romaine, spinach, cabbage, and collards at this time of the year that I would be giving them away. . . . Not this year!

Afternoon folks, yuk snow. Did the drive and now have to do the path to the coop. I hate snow but hate the freezing cold worse. Temps headed in the single digits for a couple of days and then to the 30's. It's just not fair I tell ya. I try to be good I really do but I guess such is life.

I know they say you reap what you sow but I didn't sow snow flakes.

Take care folks, income taxes to do and all that entails.

Love ya

Rancher

(oh and I"m looking into importing poultry from the UK if anyone has information on how to do it and who to contact)

GOOD AFTERNOON CHICKEN WRANGLERS
I hope all is well for all y'all " that is plural for y'all" . My climate control dial is not working. I keep trying to turn up temps and turn the winter control button to spring but it is not working. We'll at least go from the wee digits to the 40's next week. So from ice to slush and mud as is usually the case "one extreme" to the worse of the extremes.
Done complaining, at least I'm above the grass.Opps I mean over the snow,God bless you guys and All Y'all keep Warm!

Math Ace - what kind of eggs are you getting? Now that I have designed a new coop and run in my head, I'm thinking about what I want next. But first things first, gotta find the supplies for my idea. Some guy gave me rolls of chain link fence at my last chicken swap, now I neeed roofing material. Do any of you have one of those hoop-style coops? I want to attach a hoop roof to the chain link for the run. Not sure how to go about that - I'll search on here and find some ideas, I'm sure.

Rancher - what would you import? That would be exciting!

I wish I would get the last documents I need to do my taxes, too. I have them almost ready, and I'm eager to finish.

Hope that climate dial gets to working again, Karl. It's cold again here, too. I don't remeber ever having so many cold days down here. We're back into the 40s again! And it will stay that way all week - crazy! My tomato plant just started coming back, too. We'll see if it makes it. I want to re-plant, but need to find a way to keep the chickens out first.

I'm giong to have another chicken swap. We'll see how it goes. If I don't get enough folks interested again this time, it will be my last. This weekend I need to post signs in the feed stores. Wish me luck. No mater what, it's just fun to get people together and talk chickens.

Well, time to see which kids made it to school today and call them down to my office. Have a great day, chicken wranglers.

PS - Ignore my last post. Apparently it is a taboo topic here. Pretend I didn't even post it.........

Good morning people,
Chilly morning here, woke up to 7 degs.

Math: You are going to have yourself quiet a collection of chickens. What are you going to be doing with them all?

Here's a question for everyone: what do you all do with your chickens? pets, breeding, eggs, meat ect.

I myself are going to be selling eggs this year, I was giving them away the past couple of years. I have some people that hatch out the NH eggs. So I would say, the egg layers are like pets. I also raise the cornish x for meat. I was thinking of trying some rangers this year. I'll have to see.

Rancher: They have to come through customs and quarantine? I wonder how high the stack of paper work will be.

Chics: good luck with your swap.

Good morning chicken wranglers
Q cus what post
7 degrees is a heat wave to me. Got up and the tractor would not start so I got my bucket out and took lots of buckets of feed over to the cows. I know All of you guys understand pecking order but with cows I would say it is more of a bullying order. The biggest strongest cow has her way with everything and the smallest cow kicks the dog if she can. 2of the jerks pooped in front of the gates to the stalls and after it froze last night I could not get the gate open. I had to climb over it to water and feed my 2 smallest calves.
"I keep them in stalls, or they would not get to eat" because of the bullying done by the bigger girls.
Qcus I sell eggs and raise C/ rocks for freezer meat. This year about 50 for friends and family besides myself.of coarse they will have to pay for feed and help butcher. I just love butchering day, The whole family gets together'except for my daughter and my wife and my son.and I just start a choppin and a pluckin and a guttin and all y'all know just what I mean. Up 2 now 20 is the most I have done in one day how bout any of you guys?

Karl: "Q cus what post" - It was Chics post, she's starting trouble -

- second message on this page.

Karl, I remember having to walk down the feed troughs so you weren't crushed or stepped on by the cattle during feeding time. There was never really a problem for water, there was streams and ponds all over. Once in awhile you had to bust open an hole for them to be able to drink. You put dry molasses in your feed?

Enjoy your day

Kaj
