Coffee's ready...

I have been looking for straws for breeding my girls, and there is more rto choose from then I was aware of, big bulls 2200 # monsters that I would not subject my little cow to carry. I want a donor that throws 50 to 60 # calves not killer 75 to 80 # ers.

We discussed how cow breeding in Finland works with the better half a few weeks ago. Apparently, the farmers don't really have much say in what kind of combinations are used. There are a few select companies that handle most of the breeding, they keep extensive statistics on what kind of offspring is produced, and run very complicated computer models to select the optimal pairs, based on what kind of offspring they've produced previously, not how good the parent stock is. It was really interesting.

Sounds so good. Big boy for 9.

Good looking peppers. Wife not bad either lucky guy.

Good morning chicken wranglers'
Rngr shorthorns ? I am not familiar with them, but I do not know much. Felix we in the states are approaching nanny state levels of govt intervention but please allow me to breed MY STOCK as I see fit ,is how I feel about govt at this time. I would be little more then a stock tender and much less the rancher if it were done any other way.
Hennible ,I would band the bulls and feed them out for market keep the heifers for more calves and milk and good things cows give.
By the way my hens gave me 15 eggs yesterday, not bad for 22 chickens !
Do you know what? My hens squat and stick their wings out every time I approach them . At first I thought how cute , they want me to pick them up! Then as I was thinking about it I came to a disturbing realization, you see I have no roosters and I recalled all of a sudden out of the blue that this is the exact same stance they make for..., unhuh ..,you guessed it, and now I'm gonna be sick.
God Bless!

Karl, it's not government controlled, it's corporate controlled, and an efficient way of producing the healthiest and most productive animals. Nothing forces you to go with them, other than maybe the fact that there aren't many other alternatives if you go the AI route, but it's a fascinating way of doing it in my opinion. We mostly have pretty small herds here, so without a high level of co-operation it wouldn't work. Milk production is becoming more and more concentrated though.

I'm not going to go into politics, because I suspect that we disagree on quite many things, as is usually the case when such matters are discussed, I won't be able to change your mind, you won't be able to change my mind, and we'll manage to alienate most of the people on this thread.

We've gotten 1 egg out of 5 layers today, of which two are broody at the moment. I'm envious of your yield. Our last pullet might start to lay soon, I saw her brother mate her today for the first time. Both are 23 weeks old, he still hasn't crowed a single time, and she hasn't laid any eggs, but the mating seems to be a sign of them reaching sexual maturity. Any of you have experiences with slow maturing Sussexes?
