Morning people,
Looks like we are getting more snow here. Maybe to make up for that last storm that buried everyone. The better half and myself went on a nice 5 mile walk. There wasn't enough snow for snow shoes, but enough to hide the ice in spot. To much snow for micro spikes to be effective, and well the crampons were left home.
Never trust a Cooper's. I have had them take on hens three times their size.
I must be lucky or my birds are, after ~8 years here of raising eggers and meaties, I haven't lost one to a bird of prey. In the warm weather, the eggers get to roam around the property. For the meaties, I use poultry netting as a enclosure for them. I usually wait till they are big enough so they can't escape from it. Usually in the beginning I have a good half dozen escape. The eggers are new hampshire reds. Mr. roo puffs right up and starts like growling. It's rather funny, but he's doing his manly man thing to protect his girls.
I looked up coopers hawk, and way back when..... they had a name chicken hawk.
We had one cooper nail a dove here and was having a very very hard time getting airborne. I have seen them nail birds in flight, they are like a dart, crashing into the bird and both falling to the ground. They sort of remind me of kingfishers when they are hunting.
Off to the shop I go, high hoe............ It's turned into a small blizzard here. Looks like it is settling in.
Enjoy your day
