The weather reports make me nostalgic for Minnesnowta, where I grew up.

I agree on the dog-walking: get a neighbor kid or someone to take the dogs for a walk. It'll be worth in terms of improved behavior. Maybe one of the highschoolers needs to do some volunteer work for a club or school and they can walk your dogs for that!

As I explained - The big boy isn't a child's Dog at all! - I wouldn't let a child take him out. Even my older boy got dragged by him as he is sooo big!!!!! Though he doesn't pull like that these days he did so much as a puppy! When I first got him I had to hold my stick across his chest to prevent him going foward. It was hard training for him but he soon got the message I was boss. However in that time he did manage to drag my son down a hill and into the road infront of cars. Even though he doesn't pull now I still wouldn't trust him on the other end of a lead from a child. My son was 19 yrs old when he was pulled into the road so I just wouldn't let a younger child take him at all!!!! The little Dog I have no issues with but Big boy is a different matter. After a life in a shed all his puppyhood, never going outside except to chase a 4x4 round a field he had NO lead training, NO comand training and NO socialisation. When he came to us he had NOTHING not even his own blanket or toy and yet we got him from the place he was supposed to be a pet at? We knew he was going to be used to puppy farm, but their female dog died???? We are not sure what happened to her, but they wanted rid of Murph after that. So I really do have to be careful of Murph around kids and other dogs. Its just being safe!!!!! I have rescued 3 Old English and they are incredibly powerful dogs. They may look all fluffy and cuddly but honestly they are no different from a Rottweiler or Alsation. They are a very powerful herding breed and could potentially do a lot of damage. I know that Rottweilers have been known to kill - though I have never heard of an Old English doing that I would not take the risk. So good idea for the little Schnouzer but not the Murph he is off limits to kids!!!!

Morning/afternoon people,
I hate to admit it, the coffees good again. Maybe I should brush my teeth more often.....

Weather: calmer today, mid 50's. I woke up to 33 outside and 60 inside. Furnace still hasn't kicked on this year.

Shop day today....I picked up some nice looking poplar a couple of weeks ago and resaw some cherry last night. I wonder who is going to fall over first with moving the beams, vinny the van or myself.

On the chicken front, we are getting an egg every other day. Friday and balsam are slowly sneaking out into the run, but rhubarb still chasing them back into the coop.

Lamb & rice for supper tonight. I am looking forward to making some chicken noodle soup this weekend.

rancher hicks: I saw some snow in Albany the other day.

We visit the coast as much as possible. The closest coast line is about 150 - 175 miles from us, and it's the Long Island Sound or we have to go into New Jersey. We do enjoy the coast from Maine to Nova Scotia. The bay of Fundy is impressive to me. It's good that you still enjoy the coast Oesdog. So may people move to this area for the views of the mountains, yet after awhile they don't see them any more. We look west and we see them.

Enjoy your day

Kaj

Sorry, Oesdog, I guess I was thinking "kids" meant small children, like under 12. Maybe a professional dog trainer/walker?

I can't believe your furnace isn't on yet with those temperatures, Kaj! I'd freeze!! The same thing happens to people who move here for the sun and beach. I have to remind myself to go and enjoy it.

I'm getting about two eggs a day now. Waiting for Mama Leghorn to start laying again, and for the EE's to start - 23weeks and 21weeks - any day now.

I'm hoping I have a calmer day today than I did yesterday. Yesterday was CRAZY around here, plus all the things I had to do after work. I wish we were off for Veterans day. At least this weekend I don't have much planned. Gonna build a little perch in the coop for the silly new pigeons, look at how to best expand the coop, take a little day trip to go to a chicken show. And just relax.

Back to work. Have a good one.

Chicks - -

Inverness is almost 3 hours one way from here. . . .I just can not take off right now. Dh still has the gazebo project going on and I have all those baby chicks. I am going to have to start making a plan for where to put those little ones in a couple of weeks. They have doubled their size in less than a week. What ever I am going to do, I need to get moving on it before the temps return to the 30's.

Take pictures of anything that looks fantastic at the chicken show. . . . I thought I hear mentioned a month or so ago that Bev might be at this one

Look for a MARANS table.

Enjoying my first cup this morning. Here is is a beautiful sunny day in the low 40s. DH and I have the day off together (first in a while) so we will likely take all the dogs on a nice walk in the woods and just catch up. Hope you all are enjoying today as much as we are.

Math Ace - Yeah, I figured it was too far for you with everything you've got going on. I'm eager to take a look at everyone's Marans and see how my Madelide stacks up - maybe show her just for the heck of it sometime. I'll take pics!

Krcote - your day definately sounds nicer than mine.......

krcote - if I had known you were taking your Dogs out - I would have sent mine out with you!!!!!!!!!

The wind here is despirately fierce. - It is so bad I have had to go out and tie stuff down in the yard. Lay things on their side, wedge suff under stuff and put bricks and bolders on bin lids and food storage lids as the wind is just throwing stuff about and tearing the lids up. Lit the Pot belly and the wind howeled so strong down the chimeny it blew the darn thing out three times. Managed to get it lit but the back draft is smoking the place out. DH gets afraid when the wind blows the flames out of the underside of the fire. I keep telling him he needs to biuld it up because its the heat that causes the thing to take the flames up -( hot air rises!) But DH is so afraid he keeps trying to take the darn logs out and causes more darn smoke!!!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

- Yikes it is scary!!!! Science tells you you have to keep the thing as hot as you can get it not faf about !!!!!!!! Much as I love DH - fire scares him. His sister set fire to their house once when they were kids so he really is terrified of it. No matter how much I explain that you got to get it roarin like crazy he just gets more scared and does the very opposite!!!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Anyhow managed to get the thing lit and its kind of ok but he wont let me put anymore coal or logs on it now. - If it were me it would be well banked up! But hay what do I know?????? Anyhow he wants it to go out - so well thats it cold night!!! But at least DH feels safer.

I am dieing from smoke inhilation anyway and this doesn;t help the asthma one bit!!!!! Thank the lord our Jess has gone home!!!!!!!!

Oh I do hope this wind dies down some or at least changes direction a wee bit. - Oh I feel sick and I need my inhalers. Battening down the hatches here, hope you all have good weather and NO gales there????

I am just editing this cause no one else is on. Rancher - you don;t have to read this!!!! - It would be nice to know how the trip went yesterday????
Does anyone know where Tartannik went????? I left some PMs for her but she never replied and I haven;t heard anything since her trip to get the new chickens?

DH and I finally decided to kill the Pumpkin thats been hanging about our kitchen. I don;t know why but over here folk don;t seem to see Pumpkin as a good food sorce????? They would rather cut holes in them and leave the rest to rot. I mean fields and fields of them. I don;t understand it because so many folk go hungry and there is no reason to wast food. - Ok Rant over

Anyhow DH just made the most wonderful Pumpkin soup like velvet over your tongue - yum !!!!! We are going to freeze some for a starter at Christmas. We also made a lovely Pumpkin pie for T so I am looking foward to that. Should have frozen some Pumpkin and used it at Christmas. I never seem to have enough and no one seems to sell them here at any other time of year. It is such a wast of food. So anyhow had soup for lunch with beautiful home made crusty bread dipped in it - yummmmmmy

can understand totally DHs fear of fire which really came to the fore tonight as we heard on the news that 3 little kids burned to death in a house fire here and their poor mummy is terribly burned but alive in hospital she is only 27yrs old. Same age as my eldest boy's girlfriend. The kids were only 9,5 and a baby. I hope the mum survives but then I don;t know how anyone would get over such a tragic event. - Rancher says you don;t hear much of our news - so I try to add a wee bit. - we don;t hear much of yours either as CNN isn't on our TV anymore?

Good morning chicken wranglers
Oesdog sounds like your hubby just needs to learn to trust you on fire and how it works.I love a roaring fire on the hearth on cold winter night.my basment is modled on a log cabin and it feels really nostalgic and comfy./

Good afternoon, chicken peeps. Had to cover the parenting class 40 minutes away this morning, then straight to a meeting with a guardian. Just now taking a lunch break.
Thanks for reminding me I need to call a chimey sweep. I've been in my house 2 years and never used the fireplace. I'll do that next.
Not much else going on. Just glad it's Friday - it feels like it's been a Loooooong week for some reason. Have a good one!
