Coffee's ready...

Good Morning, chicken keepers!

The girls were all squaking their heads off for some reason this morning, so I went out to see what the racket was about. I still don't know why they were yelling, but I noticed the smaller Ameraucana squeezed between the bottom of the coop and a brick that I set their feeder on. I thought at first she was dead! She wasn't, but I realized when I picked her up to check on her, she has some sort of huge scab/ scar thing on her back, under her wing. I have never noticed her bleeding, and it is almost tumor-like, but dry. Once BF gets up I will take pics and post it on the injury section to see if anyone knows what it is. She is now free-ranging with everyone else and is acting fine, but I'm very worried. Maybe there was already something wrong, and that is why she is getting picked on more than the other two? I hope she is okay - she's so sweet.

Anyway, off to church this morning. I don't fee like going, but it's the big Thanksgiving dinner today and I volunteered to bring cranberry sauce. I made it with pears and walnuts in it - yummy.

Good morning/afternoon people,

Coffee's on, something different this morning.

Weather: outside-30 and partly cloudy, Today-mid to upper 40's, inside-58 and clear.

We are starting to get ice in the watering pails. I should start thinking about moving them into the coops pretty soon. We had a good hump to the tower with a nice little cheese snack on top. On the way down, our meandering ways, we came across an old bluestone quarry. What was nice about this one, it wasn't a giant hole in the ground. It look like they just started mining right into the side of the mountain. You could walk right up to the walls.

osedog: you should get yourself a nursery going there.

Everyone getting ready for Thanksgiving? Grand-inlaw, inlaws, and sister inlaw, maybe granduncle and grandaunt-inlaws, (collectively know as the old folks) are coming, but the little rat wont be able to make for dinner. I have to start getting a menu together, all I have so far is the basics.

Complement of the day: I was refereed to a old boot - old, broken in, comfy and stinky.................... I want to know if that included anything stuck to the bottom?

Enjoy the day

Kaj

Have you ever had a chicken with bumblefoot? Was it a scab and abcess like you see with bumble foot ? ? ?

Is the area hot or swollen?

When you post pictures, tell us the name so that I can follow the posts.

Okay, really weird - I went out and got her to bring in and show BF, and the scab thing is gone! It does look like she has a small blood-scab on her chest, though. Maybe it was poop or something? Very strange, but I will keep a close eye on her. I think I'll isolate her and her sisters and Mama whenever they are in the coop, though. She just looked so pitiful this morning squeezed into that brick area. And her back looks so bad when you look under the wings. I don't think I need to isolate her all by herself, but maybe keeping her away from the big girls will help.

I am having a small Thanksgiving, just my parents, brother, grandmother, and BF and son and I. I'll be brining and roasting a turkey. I also make a yummy sweet potato casserol with crumbled granola bar toping. Maybe I will try my hand at baking rolls from scratch. Heck, I've got the whole week off!!

We don't have thanksgiving here - good job cause I really couldn;t cope with it right now!!!!!

Well the little girl got a rest for a few hours this morning then Dotty and I bathed her. She looked lovely in the pretty pink outfit that Dotty had brought to put on her and it fitted really well and Dotty fixed her hair in a little plait she is adorable!!!! Then we gave her oats for her breakfast which she ate most of.
Then she had her book read to her and went out to see the chickens. She thought it was good fun to chase them!!!!! But was frightened of them up close!
We watched Garfield the movie and then I got her some toast with some banana on. She had a little cry as she missed her mommy - and I am sure it was very scary to be left here not knowing who we were!!!! She helped me tidy the kitchen up and then she met Danny and helped me feed him. She was frightened of Danny but then she realised he needed help to eat his food like she got spoon fed her oats this morning. It was a big learning curve for her to see an adult - who was like a baby younger than she is. She was a brave girl though and coped very well.

Now I am sat here finally having closed the door - after she has left. Her mommy finally came to get her. She was very thankfull and I am glad that we could help out.
I am not sure I would have left my 3 yr old with a stranger though. I know they know Ben but they sure don;t know us!!!! - What do you guys think!!!!!!!!!
Aparently "Daddy" the fellow had badly hurt his hand and back. At least its not that bad and he is back home again this afternoon. He is not pleased as the Boats are only out for 9 more days to the end of the fishing season so I guess he wont be earning much for Christmas this year?

Ben love him phoned up this afternoon and asked how the tot was doing and he offered to take her a while. - Bless him he has such a good heart but doesn;t understand in this day and age a single man simply cant just go taking little girls home with him. Trouble with Ben having the brain injury it makes him very socialy vaulnerable like a child at times.

Anyhow we survived DH has gone to bed he is grey bless and looks really ill. Ben did the right thing though as we have always said ring no matter what time if there is an emergancy. I just wish DH was well - well enough for all this. He wants to do it but his body is failing him and it is so sad to watch. I am so glad he is retired from the ambulances - but folk know and I guess because we are so far away from the ambulance services - folk automatically think DH will come if we need someone in a hurry and of course he will.

I hope the Fishermans hand gets better soon. I am not sure how bad it is or how he got hurt on the boat.

anyhow I am away to have a breakdown!!!!

- Happy thanksgiving and chicks hope your hen improves????

Morning/afternoon people,

Weather: outside-40 and cloudy, today-mid 50's and chance of showers, inside-62 and clear.

I am glad to hear everyone is ok. We lived in small towns were everyone knows each other. In emergency such as that, family or close friends would be called. I wouldn't leave our rats with strangers.

Shop day, Dr.s appointment, Stuff shells for dinner. I have a "new" job, taking the trash out once a week for my grand-mother-in-law......

No real egg production is going on, an egg or 2 every couple of days.

I hope the ground will stay soft for a few more weeks. I need to build run for the new coop.

Enjoy the day

NO real egg production here either. Not for months now???? I have one girl Drumstick (PR) who has laid about 4 maybe 5 eggs since June. Bertha (SS) still hasn;t laid anything at all since going Broody back in May? Isobella (SS), Gerty (Maran) and Caroline (?) Have all gone on strike since August when the new chicks got put in their pen!!!!! Then I have 3 Roosters who are about 22-23 weeks they all look lovely and I wouold love to keep them but I can;t. They have not crowed yet so I am ok so far.
Duck ( Maran x Leghorn ) Nugget (PR x Leghorn) and Blue ( Cream Legbar ) Of course NOT a chance of an egg from them!!!! Then I have my young ladies Mable ( SS x Leghorn) Betty ( SS x Leghorn) and my wee baby Omlet ( Maran) These are all 22-23 weeks? So should in theary give me an egg before Christmas????? So out of 11 chickens I have NO eggs!!!!!!!! Well the odd one now and then from Drumstick - she was laying everyday up until June when she had a terrible molt. She used to be really thin and now she is massive and wont stop eating to the point of bullying all the others out of the way even though she is a low ranking hen. I have to watch her with the chicks. Though The young Roos are big enough to fight back now.

It is lovely and sunny here today but cold when your outside in it.
Dh made some rally nice homemade bread again this morning and then we did a wee bit of cleaning. We got a nice coffee about 11 am and that is as far as DH got.
He is back in bed again with the hot flushes and the swollen hands. I really don;t know what to do for the best????? He says his chest feels tight. The GTN helps but last time we went for a cardiac review they said he was ok and the stent was working and everything was to plan. The angioplasts have settled ok - BUT he is still very ill all of the time. So something is not right?????? I am so worried I will lose him as he is grey a lot again and that happened before the heart attack. He is on soooo many pills as well and they keep chopping and changing them - it all gets confussing and we have to sit and do one of the pill trays now just so we don;t muck it all up. He is taking a good 15 pills plus morphine everyday???? THis last while he has been really dizzy and off balance. A few times when we have managed to go out in the car I have had to take over and drive us home. It just seems to be getting worse. - I don;t think the kids have any notion as to how ill their Dad really is.

Anyhow I am away as Dotty and Mark and our own little cherub are comming over later.
Oesdog - those of you who believe please pray for us and that DH will improve some????

Good Morning! Day off today!

Got to run errands this morning, then wait for the chimney sweep to come inspect and clean my chimney. Hopefully it will not need $2000 in repairs like the one at my old house did. I'd love to use the fireplace this winter. Unfortunately even if it is okay to use, the weather forcast is that it will be a high of 84 for Thanksgiving, so that is a bit too warm to have a cozy fire for my guests.
I am keeping a close eye on the chooks while I am at my desk. The babies seem to have taken to staying in the roost area, but there is no food up there. I rigged a little escape area down next to their nest box, but Madelide started pecking at them right next to it and they didn't seem to know they could run in there to escape to where she can't get to them. Maybe I will do something even better later and show them - and put food inside it where only they can get to it.

Oesdog, you definately need to take DH to another cardiologist. That certainly sounds like his heart/ circulation are not working at full capacity. He is grey due to the lack of oxygen, and swelling due to poor circulation. Hang in there.

Well, I'm headed to Home Depot first to get supplies for the third coop expansion project. I'll start there since they open first, then off to a few other stores. Have a great day, chicken tenders!

ETA - I'm getting two eggs a day from the three that are laying. Still waiting on Mama Sunshine to start back up, and EE's should be any day now!!! Course, I think I've said that for at least four weeks in a row now.....
