Coffee's ready...

Howdy from Texas. It's 70 degrees & overcast. Turkey day will get down to the high 20's. Their saying 31 but out here where I'm at I'm predicting 28. Our usual 40 degree weather swing. One thing about Texas if you don't like the weather now just wait a few hours. I don't mind the cold. But , I hate the cold blustering wind. Keep an eye on all our chickens & Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Chics don;t be daft - I was just agreeing with your thoughts. He is not a well man at all but he still wants to get up and do lots of stuff. So it is in a way much harder. He is taking sooooo much GTN right now. I managed to get the kids to help with heavy stuff that needed moved and all But sometimes they create more stress not less and DH isn;t in a place to deal with that right now.

Anyhow - Marans - My Maran is a feisty girl she sure beat up the Roo sam we put to her in the summer. I think they can be a bit aggressive though mine is a love at the sametime! She is head girl along with Isobella - I call them the Buzzards. Bertha is Specled Sussex, Isobella too and they are really lovely birds. I would have more if I could!!!! I am up to 11 birds right now so I am also maxed out. I also have 3 roos to hide!!!!! Seriously need to find homes for two of them but will probably put them to the hens in the spring first.

I am really tired today so will away as time here is marching being ahead of you guys I am thinking what to make for evening meals here!!!! I find it funny when I do our evening Dinner and then look on this thread and someone just posted good morning!!!!

We are surviving - weather here is much calmer and that is good.

Ohhhhhhhhh - must ASK - today DH went to the food store and he picked up feed for the chickens. Well normally they get Layers pellets and Poultry grain. This time someone made a mistake cause I have Layers Pellets and Layers grain????? Never got that before??? It kind of looks like the layers pellets but seems to have another grain through it???? Anyhow we were not at our local store but the one in town so I never saw this stuff before. Does anyone know what Layer grain is???? Is it just Layers ground up like Annaraved said to get for the baby chicks that I couldn;t find ages ago???? Or what. Do I have to go buy more feed is what I am saying - should I go get another bag of Poultry grain or will this be fine to feed all of them on for a while????? HELP Anyone know ????? THe guy I got the hens from told me just to feed them Layers pellets and then the grain before bed????? So what about this stuff????????

Nope. it was fine.

I have to figure out where/how to hang my christmas lights. I haven't had a real *house* for so long that I forgot how it works. Lessee - first you untangle them, then you go thru to check each bulb and replace it, then...

Good morning/afternoon people

Coffees good and strong and for a special treat, homemade sausage patties with eggs or should I fry it up like corn beef? Food decisions so early........

Weather: outside-40, cloudy & very windy, today- upper 40's - low 50's and clear, inside-65 clear till I eat the sausage.

Here's something for everyone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAIbwodgoU8

I haven't even started thinking about Christmas. We usually get the tree a week before the holiday. This year might be a bit different, no rats will be joining us with the tree cutting. Our holiday starts on the 24th and lingers for a good week. To us, it's a "trying" time. On a different note, we received an turkey from my old job.

I feed our birds either a boiler or layer mash and this time of the year, I am a little heavy in giving them scratch grains, cracked corn, sun flower seeds, barley. Today it looks like they might have some squash seeds to go with it. They get their scratch usually about an hour before dark.

Enjoy the day

Good Morning! Gonna get started on my cooking for Thanksgiving dinner, and do some shopping at the mall while most people are at work. I'm making chirizo sausage and cheddar cheese stuffing (as well as the traditional stuff), a pumpkin pie cheesecake, pecan pie, mashed sweet potato with granola strussel, and the turkey - which I am going to brine in salt water overnight. My guests are bringing the rest. What are you guys having?

I think Mama leghorn is now moulting. I thought she just still looked terrible because of having been broody and now taking care of the babies, but her feathers are all over the place! Her pretty tail has been reduced to one long feather sticking up. It's pittiful. I didn't know they could go through a mini-moult at nine months.

Well, time to get cooking. Have a good one!

(Kaj - I have no volume for some reason since moving my computer - I will mess with it later and check out that link)
Math Ace - I always get to the stores too late for anything good on clearance after Chirstmas. I don't even remeber what I have for this year.

Sorry I haven't been on in awhile, I'm just so tired and busy trying to get ready for the snow that came today. Lord have mercy!

Anyhow had to comment on this posting, grains like corn help your birds generate heat, so it's good for them to go to bed with a full gullet. I've read this in more than one periodical.

Back to getting ready, had Jesse here Saturday and we pretty much got everything put away. He's worth every penny. I was dreading the garden hoses as there must be 5 or 6 to roll up. Not easy for me. Got chicks in the brooder and eggs in the incubator, Lord help me.

DW is in a baking mood so I'm in big trouble if I expected to take off any weight. We bought a new 7.0cu freezer and I need to suck it up and take out some roosters. It's full of turkey but none I've done. I've posted a couple of the younger roos on CL but no takers so I figure I'll have to give them away if I can. I expect to put up a grow out coop next year, Good Lord willing. I just wish some of this global warming would blow through and dry up this land. Either that or the Lord would plunk some wisdom in my head on how to solve the wet.

Holiday may suck cuz DD and hers are in TX and DS and his are in AL and youngest DD and hers are going to his families and the middle DD's pizzaman broke up with her so she'll be in great spirits. I pray she meets a nice guy at church and I get to walk at least one of them down the ailse there. But the Lord knows. Oldest DD got married in a church but it's not the same as your own church. Maybe someone can understand.

Trilyn is bound and determined to hatch RIR's and I hope we can find some eggs soon. The weather really isn't bad for shipping eggs cuz you want it on the cool side. Temps inside vehicles should be just about right to keep them safe. Heck you can't ship in summer the only times safest are in early spring or early fall when it's cool.

Well there you go. Lots to think about for the winter and I should be ok, Lord knows I've got tons of yarn and magazines and books. Oh and can't forget the chickens, I may be out there building in the snow. Lord have mercy!

Still love ya all
Rancher
