Good morning chicken wranglers
Oesdog what an analogy, excellent comparison.Gargoyle It is cold here also 32 this morning and frosty everywhere.
Platinum dragon nice monincer, razygoatlady that one should be the name of the nieghborhood witch that chases little kids into the broom closet and cooks them into cookies for her goats!LOLNice to hear from you all. Chics once a chicken starts eating eggs she is kinda as useful as a dog that kills chickens in my opinion.Hope you get it cleared up.
Have a great day God bless!

Okay, so the fact that Sky is eating eggs changes the dynamics.

I will put as many eggs as I can under Ginger - I have 14 on the way. Is 11 okay, or is that too many? She isn't very big, even though she's a Marans cross, she's more the size of her Ameraucana half. It is also in the upper 80's everyday now, so even the eggs that aren't fully covered by her will stay fairly warm. It's probably in the 90's inside the nest box, especially with her crazy sister stuffed next to her. But I will move her to the brooder cage alone and just leave Sky where she is with a few of the eggs. The other girls will probably lay in there, but I will just pull them out every day.

If I catch Sky eating eggs again, she may be on her way to the swap on Saturday......full disclosure, of course.

Mmmm... my coffee is good. I was up past my bed time reading a really good mystery novel. Couldn't put it down. Now I've got to wake up and get some work done. The school year is winding down and that is always a busy time!

Have a great day, chicken wranglers!

I have two birds who lay thin VERY thin shelled eggs about three times a month. They lay them and leave the nest. Then another bird hops up in the nest to lay her eggs and sits on the clutch and BREAKS the egg. Then she leaves. ..
Then I have a couple of girls that just love getting to eat these broken eggs.

It is truly a mess. .. . The same two eggs each time.

So, I don't consider the girls true egg eaters - - - because dinner is SERVED for them . . . they didn't break the egg open.

It has not spread to other birds and ONLY happens to these super thein shelled eggs.

What I am saying is this MAY pass and not become a problem. I would PROTECT my investment. This girl is NOT staying on the NEST, so I would not set eggs under her. She is NOT ready to be a momma. She is being NAUGHTY and I would keep her away from the $ $ $ $ eggs.

Old man winter is darn persistent. Hopefully this will be the last of his unwanted visits this spring. Hot coffee is brewing, rain is falling. The high today is to be 39 F with snow later tonight before morning lows of 26 F. I'll have to remember to bring in the chicken water tonight. Breaking ice at 6 AM is a pain.

That was actually the only time I've seen her off the nest in three days. I forgot the rest of the story- I grabbed the egg from her and went out of the coop with it, intending to throw it out. The shell was normal, but who knows - maybe it did break. When I got outside, out of nowhere my Marans jumped up and grabbed the broken egg out of my hand and took off running. The other girls chased her like they all KNEW what was up!! I couldn't get it back and they all gobbled it down.

I left the egg Sam laid in the other, isolated nest box (the one in the broody cage) just to see if it is still there when I get home.

14 eggs are far too many for a smaller hen. - Even 11 eggs are pushing it. 6-8 is probably the best amount though my Bertha was say on 15 at one time!!!! She could cover them all but then she is a massive fat Red Sussex. For your girl 6-8. Though if you want to put 11 have a go. Nothing ventured etc.

Oesdog - Good luck!!!

Do they eat enough calcium? They need calcium to make strong egg shells.
We save our egg shells, dry them, break them into small bits (so they don't look like eggs) and our girls love eating them. It's a good source of calcium.
