Where I live we have winters that can get to 20 below and summers that can get into the 100. I am a first time chick mom of 5 chicks all about 2 1/2 weeks old. I have a Cocko Maran, an Ester egger, 2 Mixed, and a White Crested Black Polish. I don't have a coop yet but I am thinking of getting a large 6.5 x10 chicken run and getting something like a dog house that I could do a bit of work on to make safe and comfy for my babies. Does anyone have any helpful hints or advice about what I should do to keep them cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Plus if you could tell me any common sense things that I might not know about would be great. Thanks a lot guys! :thumbsup

Well honestly I am not sure where she cam from.I got her from a friend of my family he teaches high school students they were hatching chicks in their class and some of the kids did not want their chicks and nether did the teacher so he gave them to me. Assuming your in the continental US, more or less in the Midwest or Northeast, your situation isn't all that abnormal. An XL dog house might work well. Chickens do a lot better in the cold than people give them credit. Its making sure the coop isn't too shut up to allow moisture to escape that causes problems more than temp.

I live in west texas and it has been above 105 the whole past week. Chickens will be fine as long as you give them shade and plenty of water. During the winter again they do just fine. The coop I have for them has open windows and it doesn't bother them. When it does freeze I just pour hot water in their frozen water bin.

So even if it gets to 20 below zero they wont need heaters? I am just worried because I live up in Idaho and we have some very harsh winters
No...

Heaters for a house and flock your size invite more problems than benefits, fire, bugs...Although you will have to heat the water some way so that doesn't freeze over.

Chickens have a down feather coat, much like you pay big money for. And, they radiate heat. Someone here mentioned they know an open front coop user in Alaska.

Do you have a link or picture to what you "want" to do, what your goal would be? A budget in mind?
