Hello everyone! I am planning on crossing a wild Mallard drake with a Buff Orpington duck hen this spring. Does anyone know what the offspring will look like? \

Thank you! I have looked at that before, but I was unsure if it is accurate. Do the pictures depict exactly what the bird will look like, or just a general guess?

So far the crosses I've calculated the pictures show almost exactly what they should look like (for some crosses they don't have pics yet though).

I crossed a White Wyandotte cock with two of my Columbian Wyandotte hens to bring in better combs, yellow leg color and size. Not only did I get Columbian chicks, I got a high percentage of Barred Wyandotte chicks....all cockerels except for one Barred pullet. I'll breed the CW pullets to a CW cock.
In breeding a White Wyandotte hen to a Columbian Wyandotte cock, I also got Barred chicks as well as Columbian chicks...these Barred were also all cockerels.

That is to be expected. Recessive white masks the phenotypes under the white. White wyandottes can carry extended black, columbian, sex linked silver and sex linked barring. None of of your offspring were white because the parent was recessive white. Recessive white is an inhibitor of nonwhite color in chickens.

A common 'cheat' for clear legs on whites is to use barring.

For example, if a barred rock did not have barring, it would be a solid black chicken with black legs.... their yellow legs is due to barring.

Black and silver are also often used 'under white' as it is supposed to help with creating a cleaner, crisper white.

I set 15 eggs from a Cream crested Legbar over Isabelle Leghorns last sunday and some are already showing signs of life! I bought them mostly for egg color, but I'm curious what the resulting cross will look like!
What color will they be? Do you think the chicks will be sexlinked? I tried to use the color calculator, but I don't know all the genes in play. Any ideas?

No sex linked chicks (all offspring will only carry one barring gene, autosexing in legbars is mostly due to two barring genes in males and one in females)

offspring- barred, crested, dark brown leghorns (gold duckwing)

the male will provide the barring gene to all the offspring therefore, all are barred

cream ( from legbar) and lavender (isabella) are recessive genes so they wil not be expressed in the offspring

the offspring should be dark brown and not light brown if the isabelle is brown at the E locus

crest is incompletly dominant so the size of the crest may be smaller in the offspring (assuming the legbar is purebred for crest)

Looks like a silver-based hen was the mother. The father is red-based color. Which would mean your chicks are red sexlinks. The yellow/grey chick will be male with his mother's coloring, but with some red 'leakage.' The brown one is female, and will likely be the female version of the father's partridge coloring.
