Hi there my people.
I have a white cochin rooster and a buff cochin hen. When the the eggs hatch the chicks are black. But the calculator tells that they will be buff. What is wrong. Will i ever get buff chicks from them?

Do you have pedigrees? Is it quite possible that if black is Dominant and they both carry black then the chicks are black. However the chicks chicks could be Buff. May be wrong and sorry if that was confusion...

There're a couple different e-locus genes that determine the patterns and basic colours of the chick. Recessive white (the colour of white that Cochins are) hides everything. Every pattern, every modifier gene. So the calculator makes the educated guess that the underlying e-locus pattern/colour is Partridge. In this case, it was wrong.

The recessive white is hiding one or two E (extended black) genes. E is dominant to every other pattern, including Buff, and it makes the chicken a solid variant of black. The chicks inherit that E gene, and are black themselves.

The black can be modified—diluted to Lavender, Blue, Chocolate or Splash, striped with Barring—but it is still black.
