Color Range Broilers On the Way

Yeah, that would be good. We made soup a few times with them. It was really
good.

Our silkies are high quality and I can't eat them but the idea that JM might
have a silkie bred for meat got my attention.

It all tastes like chicken

Does silkie meat taste different?

I know Shook Poultry on here bought 500 to start them, then the Asians bought them apparently to eat.

The quality of the silkies is decent. I found alot of mine had single combs though.

I'd grade those silkies a step above most hatcheries.

As for the taste it's not really different. They have black skin and a black membrane
on much of the meat. You would never know it in a blindfold test. The ratio of
white to dark meat is the same as any normal standard.

We tried to barbeque an 18 week old roo. Is was tough but we didn't brine and
he ranged a lot. The 3 others just went into a soup pot. They were great, but
no noticable difference to a regular chicken.

The next one is gonna be brined for 24 to 36 hours then baked like a Cornish Game
Hen.

Anthony T,

Are you lovin those Rangers yet? Have they gotten friendly towards you?

Mine swarm on me everytime I go out the back door. They can be down at the barn or in the goat pen, or out in the pasture, and when they hear the door open and shut, they come runnin and flappin to see me. They are happy to get food, but they are also happy to be picked up and petted! They are also growin like weeds.

I took some pix of mine, and will post them when I get back to the computer they are on. Janet in Nashville TN

We love ours! They are only a week old and are huge! They're pretty friendly, but they'll taste even better

Here are a few of ours a couple days ago:

They are doing great, even with all the rain we have been having. At 11 days old they have feathered wings, getting tails and the combs are starting to come in. And they are big! I wouldn't call them freindly, but they are not scared of me either. If you have food in your hands they are right there.

I JUST NOTICED THIS PART OF THE THREAD AND THOUGHT I'D SAY

"THE SILKIES TURNED OUT GREAT FOR THE ASIAN MARKET."

THEY LOVE BLACK SKIN CHICKEN!

OUT OF THE 550 THAT I ACTUALLY GOT FROM JOEL WE ONLY LOST 22 AND WE RAISED THEM UNTIL THEY WHERE 14 WEEKS OLD.

I AM NOW RAISING 1000 OF JOEL'S RED BRO'S FOR MARKET, I GUESS WE'LL SEE HOW THAT TURNS OUT IN ABOUT 8 WEEKS.

I'd been told the color range birds would take 10 weeks to hit market weight, but at the rate they have been growing I am thinking they might hit it in 8-9. They eat everything they can get, food I give them, bugs, weeds, seeds, not picky at all.
