Colorado Shooting - How horrible!

It seems that it's acceptable to post in support of civilians using guns in public and to suggest how to use them in the middle of a crowded cinema but It's not OK to disagree with those comments.

Probably an effective way to have the pants sued off you and get locked up for a long time is to take pot shots at another killer gunman amidst a group of innocent people. You won't walk out of it in a torn shirt, bloodied but unbowed, with the crowds cheering you and the police patting you on the back while the background music builds up to a crescendo. You may well, instead, share the same morgue as the other guy.

When the shooting has started especially the magnitude that was seen in the theater someone shooting back is the least of the problems.

Conceal carry folks have been trained and certified for handling a weapon and that training is recognized by the courts as valid especially in self defense.

The same training that cops get is available to the public and is usually taught by police officers.

You really do not know the gun culture that well TT.

I think what is trying to be avoided here is a debate on gun control which usually ends the way it always does.

I don't mind you disagreeing with me but please leave it at just that.

I dont think anyone sees it playing out like that... Sure the best way to save you own skin is to grab some kid to use as a human shield as you run away. The right thing to do though is to do what ever you can so someones wife an kids has that extra second to get away. If that means getting killed then so be it. Most people that would do something know what the odds are.

I have been running in to stuff that others run away from sense I was 16 years old. I would put money on it that some people in that theater did just that.

Folks, I've discussed this with my brother and several of his friends that CC. The one place that all of us said we never carry is a theater. The main reason is the seats are too tight and anybody that would bump into you would feel the weapon. Furthermore he, the bad guy, was wearing body armor which means a head shot, in a dark environment. My weapon is compensated, I miss and I'm flash blinded and the bad guy gets a really good bead on me.I miss who is it gonna hit. Also if I do hit him and the round goes through the bad guy who is it gonna hit? There are so many aspects of this it can not be simplified.

If I was in that theater with my family in hind sight I would have been on the ground but looking for an opportunity to fire myself. I train and shoot regularly so I have the skills and confidence in my marksmanship and judgement of when to fire... that is what responsible CC need do.

My wife's good friend's nephew was shot in Iraq in the chest with body armor on (and the leg... no armor) with an AK47 from about 500 yards away, it broke 3 ribs, collapsed a lung and put him on the ground unable to breathe. I think a 40 S&W would do the same. There are also rounds available that are designed not to pass through.

Another voice of reason amongst would-be Ramos! The issue of gun control is quite a separate one from the irresponsibility of starting a gunfight in a dark, crowded place. If people want to post their argument for it, I'll post mine against.

Actually, the argument for taking a pot shot or two in the dark in a cinema full of people is irrelevant because, if my information is correct, that cinema banned guns.

The problem is that some folks who have a CC permit meet the bare minimum requirements to have it, then never bother to practice regularly or even properly maintain their gun. They buy a gun out of fear, and feel that simply carrying it will be enough. They don't think things through when getting qualified.
Another problem is hot-headed people carrying a gun, legally or illegally. A yelling match can turn into gun waving, which can lead to shots fired and someone dead. It's happened quite a few times around Flint, just south of me. Arguments in a parking lot end up with someone dead or injured, over a trivial matter that could have been let go.

It would be nice if all CC holders were responsible and diligent about being proficient with their weapon, but that's not always the case. There are some areas where even the Police aren't as good with their firearms as they should be.
I don't think more gun laws will solve anything. Better enforcement of current laws would be nice, as well as better education about firearms in general.
