So I spent most of my day doing chores around the house. You know, the ones that take a lot of time. wake up, check for eggs,(1 egg) put some water on the dry grass so it wont die, check the chickens(2 more eggs), go do more wireing in the shop, Up and down many ladders, as the wireing that needs to be done is at roof level. 14 feet in the air. check chickens (1 more egg) do more wireing in the shop until I run out of parts to install. One of my girls walks out while I am on the ladder and shows me one more egg. Not bad out of six hens 5 eggs today. Nope I didnt fall off the ladder, not once.
Then it was time to get the brooder ready for chicks. one 35 gallon plastic tub, some bedding, waterer, feeder, spot light for heat and some wire mesh cloth to keep it cat proof. vualla, I am ready for some chicks. The light has the temp holding steady at about 98 degrees. I hope this is correct. It will be my first time with chicks.
Do you need to feed them medicated chick satrter? And how big of a bar of food would I need to get? I got a 50 pound normal bag. I figured if they didnt eat it all by the time they are big enough to switch to regular feed then I would mix it in with the regular feed.
It has definately been a busy day. oops, I forgot about the water. 3 hours in one spot. I sure am glad I am on a well.
oh and I found out that the last chicken I got (my buff orpington is a roo) started crowing today. I knew we called him lucky for a reason. I am allowed to have roo's here in the county. I now have 6 hens and two roos, anyone need a BO roo?

Golden comets are New Hampshire roo x White Rock hen with the silver gene. Is that the one you mean?

I have heard of a golden comet but I do not think it is the same as a gold star.. At least I haven't found any reliable information stating that.

http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGP/Sex-links/BRKSexLink.html

This site says that a gold star is a cross between a RIR and a Rhode Island White.

That site said a "golden sex-link" is a RIR x RIW. Again I don't think that is a gold star, at least I have not found any info to state it is.

Reason I ask is that I know it is a type of gold Sex link I just wan to know what specifically. Elizabeth country corner is selling them in their mar 1 batch of chicks and I may/may not have accidentally ordered 2... I know they are a good layer but I would like to know what they are. There is very little information on them. There are so many types of sex linked chicks too that it seems any info on the gold star has been lost in the shuffle.

=) Sounds sort of what I do... do a chore, check for eggs...do something else, check again. My little one is with me this weekend so she's out to the chickens every hour or so now.

I don't feed medicated but do a probiotic mash. They do get messy with it but I haven't had many issues with the new babies because of it. But that is a choice you'll have to make. 50# should be plenty, for now.

BO's are beautiful roos, hopefully someone will want him. Or you can wait and see if he gets mean... then the soup pot is always an option.

At this point he is quite docile and friendly. when I come into the run he likes to hop up on my arm and stand on my shoulder as I walk around. He is at the bottom of the pecking order at the moment, but likes to be around me whenever I am in the run. If you want to pick him up that is a whole other story. he will run and try and hide from you. As long as he thinks he is in charge he is really a fun bird to have around. My hens and leghorn roo just push him around a lot. i think that when he is around me that he thinks he is something special. I dont think my kids would let me get him around a stew pot at this point.

The red sex-link (also known as Golden Comet, Gold Star, or Cinnamon Queen depending on the specific cross used) are produced by a number of different crosses. White Plymouth Rocks hens with the silver factor are crossed with a New Hampshire male to produce the Gold Comet. A Silver Laced Wynandotte hen is crossed with a New Hampshire rooster to produce the Cinnamon Queen. Additional possible red sex-link cross combinations are the Rhode Island White hen and a Rhode Island Red rooster or a Delaware hen with a Rhode Island Red rooster. Males hatch out white and can feather out to pure white or with some black feathering depending on the cross. Females hatch out buff or red, depending on the cross, and they feather out buff or red.

found here: http://www.ca.uky.edu/smallflocks/sex_linked_crosses.html

I actually bred these in my mixed flock during the summer. I had a girl go broody and two of the eggs were SLW and my Red roo. I've still got the boy that hatched, the girl went to a new home before she started laying.

My walls finally arrived at 4 pm. Guillermo did NOT deliver himself and told me he had delivered another shed kit first. After his driver left, he called and asked me to remove the complaint I had filed in Paypal. I told him I would after I had the shed together and was sure it was all correct. He got pretty mad. I told him he had wasted a week and a half of my time waiting for my shed, and now it was his turn to wait. I am positive I would not have walls if I had not filed the complaint. It will remain active until I am satisfied he has delivered everything I need. I am furious that I have now lost a week of perfect weather for building, and according to the weather forecast we are coming into a week of probably not so good weather for building.

I don't think this guy has a clue anyone else's time is important, and I would not do business with him again under any circumstances. He lies with abandon, does not communicate until forced to, and could not care less that I cancelled plans day after day after day waiting for him because he said he was delivering a shed and then didn't, and did not call to tell me so.

My stress level is through the roof, and poor Bob is fretting over every little detail, because that's what he does, bless his heart. Once we actually get going I think we will both feel better. In the best of all possible worlds, we will get the floor done and walls up. In the real world I'm fairly sure we'll get the floor done, walls might be a stretch, but a girl can hope, right? :)

Adam, sex linked layer chicks are just about always a white hen covered by a red or black rooster, and since they are bred for hatch-day sexing, and high egg production in this case, the hen is nearly always a white leghorn or a white rock. If the hen is a leghorn they should begin laying earlier than 6 months, and lay a large egg pretty reliably 5-6 days a week. My unidentified red hen I refer to as a production red may very well be a sex link, she is the best layer in my flock. I get a large or extra large egg almost every day since she started laying in July. She has the light build of a leghorn.

Haha! I found it!! I just kept following the links under google images until I found some useful information!

"Gold Star
This bird is a cross between two very traditional breeds, the Light Sussex and Rhode Island Red. They sport beautiful black tail and neck feathers. These birds lay about 300 shop coloured brown eggs in there first year."
