Colorado

Been an interesting week at my hen house. Monday, I'm sitting in the run, socializing with the girls when Floppy, my dominant year-old Welsummer gives out with a squawk that reminds me of nothing else but the videos people post of their rooster attempting his first crow. Just one guttural squawk, but definitely not clucking. Now this is a hen that started laying late last summer, so I'm sure she's a girl, and I haven't heard anything else out of her since.

Today I sectioned off the run so my two-week old chicks have a place to go and be safe from the adults. I'm in the process of securing the fencing when I hear a commotion in the coop. Out runs my EE, definitely low girl in the pecking order. Immediately following her comes Floppy, who then pins her, grabs the back of her neck and mounts her. Not five minutes later, Floppy mounts two of my other hens.

I'm thinking a little counseling may be in order.

But the chicks were glad to be let out of the coop and enjoyed playing outside all afternoon.

Well you certainly did have a interesting week.. maybe her hormones are out of wack...
Chicks!
I have been finding that my two one week old chicks are rather not such a handful as I originally thought they would be... do they make more noise agent they get older?

A little more noise but not substantially. The peeps change to chirps after a couple of weeks. When I'm outside with my two-week olds, can hardly tell the difference between them and the sparrows trying to pick up scratch from the run.

Do I just post on here about going to chicken fest? Do i say how many people intend to come?

If you do this next year I will plan to help to sell or help with chick prizes...

Do I want to bring main dishes like fried chicken, chicken sandwitches and so forth...
Or bring desert type of items or should I try to bring both???

So excited!!!

So, I'm thinking I've got a little guy, here. These are my (almost) two-week old Salmon Faverolles. I noticed last night how dark (his?) wings are.

My "teens" (8 week-olds) are in their coop for the first night tonight. It isn't supposed to get too cold tonight, so we'll see how they fare.

I have the mini-coop sitting right up against the big girls' run. I'm hoping this will help them get used to each other, and make transition into the main coop less stressful. We shall see!

Wendell, I am planning to be there, will bring probably some chicks for sale and will be happy to donate one or some for prizes depending on what I have left. Right now I have 24 Cuckoo Marans and 15 Black Australorp pullets not spoken for and by Chicken Fest they will be I think 10-12 weeks old if I still have them, so if you want a started pullet or two for prizes I can hang onto a couple.

Week of ups and downs. Not a great RIR hatch, but got my Tony Albritton SS chicks and am very excited to watch them grow up :) Getting more RIR eggs and some Buttercup eggs (thanks Doc!) next week to set. Looking forward to getting the power to the new coop done so I can move the rest out of the crawl space - hopefully this weekend.

I would like to see different breeds of chickens, is there some type of show or a good place to check out chickens here in Colorado? I just started keeping chickens so I would like to learn more about them.
Come to ChickenFest 2013 on May 18th. Or you can contact some of the local chicken keepers and see what they have. Most of us would be happy to show you and talk to you about our chickens!

Just post something here or PM me, or post if on the FB group. Any food that has something, (however remote :) ) to do with chicken. Be creative. you can bring whatever you want.

Cool. Go ahead and bring what you have, you never know, someone may want your extras and you could go home without then!

LOL. ROFL.
Maybe she is showing dominance, like a female dog will do or when she is in heat. or maybe you have a rooster that has some physiological or developemental issues.....
