We started building the coop yesterday! I say "we", but it was my husband, with me watching (I am having mobility issues right now, and am somewhat useless... but he still likes the company)..... He got the 4 walls framed (except the egg boxes) in the garage. 1/3 of my wire order is at the post office (no sure where the other two rolls are, lol)..... So excited it's finally getting started! I am having trouble staying out of the garage (I want to finish it!!)
I asked this question before, but didn't get a straight answer, so here goes...
I have been reading the pros and cons of sand and deep litter the last several months, and am curious if anyone in the Pueblo West / Canon City areas (or other areas with high winds) uses sand inside the coop? What impact (if any) do the winds have on the sand?
Frog Eggs-We are building our coop and run right now and also trying to determine which is best. I think we are leaning towards sand to start (we live in windy Broomfield) and perhaps moving to deep litter if we don't like the extra cleanup of sand. We were going to do poop trays but have decided against it because of some of the posts I have read on this site. Would love to see pictures of your progress. We started building the coop yesterday! Here is a picture of our coop and run in progress. We have all of the siding done now and we are hoping to get all of the trim and painting done this weekend. You can see our nest boxes in the back. They took forever to design and build since we changed our plans when we bought Jersey Giants and needed bigger boxes lower to the ground. So we have 2 large boxes on the bottom and 2 smaller ones on the top.
Outside view of the nesting boxes before we got the doors and siding completed.
