Is Mary actually getting Ameracauna's in now or are they still the Easter Eggers from McMurray? I'm sure my husband would be glad to tote some babies into you when they arrive as he drives into town to work about three days a week and we live out in Kiowa so it's and easy pick up for him. Just let me know when they come in because I don't pay any attention to her chick days anymore now that we're breeding our own.

My guess is just EEs. They're all coming from a hatchery so...

Anyone in the colorado springs or surrounding area have any Australorp and or Wyandotte hens they'd be willing to sell. I only need two and would like young hens soon the lay or just started laying. Please contact me

farmerlor - thanks for the offer! I'm reconsidering Americaunas or EE's but may take you up on it if I go for it and don't find a closer source.

BTW - I'm getting some meat birds next week, should be out of the brooder by the 2nd or 3rd week of March. Will a closed coop with straw be OK for them for overnight and snowy days during typical Denver spring weather?

Thanks!

If it was me I'd give them two days to figure out what food is, and use shavings instead of straw. Softer and all. Also, how many chicks you have would depend on how feasable that is, plus how large the brooding coop is. If it's a large space, and you have maybe ten or twelve tiny bodies, no, not a good idea. They won't keep it warm enough by body heat alone for that. You could try it, but I'd be worried to. Course, I was also worried about the two momma cochin hatched, and she has kept them warm just fine so what do I know

Thanks ColoWyo. We'll make sure to keep them warm with a heat lamp while they're in the brooder. Its only after they've gone outside into the coop that I'm really concerned about. Apologies if that wasn't stated well.

Thanks again,

Huh... Well, I let DH look at the list of breeds that they're getting in at Elizabeth (looking for which breed to get as our 'spare' and he kinda jokingly pointed out the Silver Spangled Hamburg. Then I brought up a picture and FOR ONCE he actually showed genuine interest in a breed. How well do these ladies fair up here???

We ordered from Mary at Elizabeth Country Corner last year: 5 black australorp pullets and 5 americana pullets. One of the blackies turned out to be a boy! And the americana are actually easter eggers. It's obvious from the vast differences in the tufts, leg colors, and the eggs they lay. No clue what hatchery Mary actually got them from but I'm satisfied. Not one bird died... all are still healthy! And the roo turned out to be very good at his job. We have some of his chicks hatching at this very moment!

Ordered more blackies and other chicks from Mary again. Since we're not interested in showing, and needed more for egg production, didn't care if they conform to standards.

My chicks (from her!) are due the middle of March but I'm out in the boonies in Elbert County and not sure that would help you get yours. Except I open earlier and stay open later!

Seriously, Hubby works in the Highlands Ranch so would be available on Sunday evenings.

Let me know.
