You know Wifezilla, I don't know that I've ever asked. What do you do with your quail? I mean, do you raise them for the hell of it? Or is it for meat/eggs? Pets? To sell? I've never really asked before

For now mainly eggs. I have a chicken egg allergy, but quail and duck eggs don't bother me. But if I can get some good breeding groups together, the extra roos will be meat. As for the pet factor, I do spoil my animals, but that doesn't mean I wont eventually eat them

I do think quail make good pets for their singing alone. The fact that they can make you breakfast too...that just makes them even cooler

Ok, cool

I plan on raising them for meat, more for the dogs and cats than for us (it'd take several of those to make me full

) Thanks for that though, that gives me good info

Heard back from that guy and he does want the button but wants to find a male first. I think, since I have a cage, I can just grab zippy next time I go to Denver if you guys can come to town at the same time. I can grab some heat packs to keep her warm for the trip.

Anyone in West Denver/Golden with some extra Americauna chicks?

If not, could someone please pick a half dozen or so for me if they go down to Elizabeth, Kiowa, or anywhere else with them? I'll be glad to meet or pick them up from you and make it worth your while. I'd like to start raising some in with a batch of Freedom Rangers I'm getting.

Please send me a PM if you can help me out on this.

Thanks!

Zippy might not have enough light to start laying yet, but aren't buttons more seasonal layers and breeders? She may just be waiting for spring.

Melissa, that is why I am ordering extra quail. I know a few people who want hens but can't have roos (even though i think their little quail crows are adorable...some don't LOL). I figure I will just use the extra boys for food, get my extra male some girlfriends and sell of the extra hens.

As for ducks, the girls are starting to get more regular in their laying, but some of the eggs are still freezing. As soon as the night temps get above freezing I will see if I can entice Lexi to set a clutch

In the mean time I bought a wafer thermostat for the incubator. If I can get that going I might have some sooner, but I will keep you informed.

Yeah, I was pretty sure that was the case (and too lazy to check the relevant thread to be sure) so I just figured I'd get your opinion as well

Sorry DenverBird, we have some young EE's, but they are all Mille Fluer Bantam Cochin x EE crosses

I don't figure that's what your looking for. I thought, heavily, about going down to elizabeth in a couple weeks, they are getting in the SSH's in their first shipment and CJ wants them, but it's a bit far just for them. We'll probably wait until Murdoch's in Longmont has them before getting them

Is Mary actually getting Ameracauna's in now or are they still the Easter Eggers from McMurray? I'm sure my husband would be glad to tote some babies into you when they arrive as he drives into town to work about three days a week and we live out in Kiowa so it's and easy pick up for him. Just let me know when they come in because I don't pay any attention to her chick days anymore now that we're breeding our own.
