Sure glad today was cooler than yesterday! That heat is not something I'm ready for. My little sub flock of chicks integrated themselves today while I was at work. That was a surprise when I got home, all 5 of them together & not looking like they were in Thunderdome. That definitely makes things easier at night for me (don't have to set up a travel crate inside the coop for the youngest 3). I do think there might still be problems putting the 2 males together & am considering keeping each set of 5 separate. No fighting yet, Memnoch still flies away from Odysseus, but he keeps trying to dominate Odysseus's hens & that's gonna be a problem I think later on. Memnoch is heading towards being much bigger than Odysseus & I'd just rather they not kill each other. I might put the 2 of them in a bachelor pad since that'll probably be easier for me to build on my own than another coop. Just trying to think ahead since I kinda lost that ability with the brain injury.

Also, I'm sorta regretting having my photo of Lila on the front page now. I could do without condescending comments about how I can't take care of chickens if a dog ate one of my chicks. I mean, I already felt bad about that, I still feel bad about that. I don't understand why people do that. I appreciate the kindness & tact everyone has shown me in this thread. It's helped immensely in difficult times & when I've had newbie questions & when I just wanted to talk about how much I enjoy my chickens & didn't have anyone else to do that with. Thank you.

Don't them bother you dear, f*em, life is too short to let another persons need to spew vitriolic bile to keep you from enjoying the good things you have accomplished, I feel sorry for them, they lack the milk of human kindness and i am sure that hurts their better angels.

Like no one ever looses a chicken to a dog. Their own or someone elses.

I think Uzi, that given the difficulties you have faced you have done a tremendous job. Heck when the little roo showed up you did not even have a chicken let alone hatching eggs and shipped ones at that.
I have learned in my long life that there are always going to be vile people out there.

X3 I posted a nice comment on your page for moral support! Keep up the good work, you are a natural animal person. Don't let the little people get you down!

Thank you very much, everyone. I've been having a difficult time with people lately. LOL My job is on the edge of discriminating my disability in actual illegal ways. It's exhausting in general to have to do the work of 4 people even without a brain injury & a billion times worse with one. Add to that my coworkers oscillating between treating me like I'm an incompetent nincompoop & a lazy unreasonable not so nice word, continuing money issues & Denver Health sending me to collections repeatedly for a bill my insurance paid almost 6 months ago. I'm just really tired of people that can't manage to have some common courtesy. Next month is the 1 year anniversary of the accident, an accident where a guy almost killed me & then got away with blaming me for the entire thing. I'm stressing a little. So, I appreciate the kind words. Y'all are good people. :)

In an attempt to lessen the cognitive fatigue migraine I've had since about mid-April, I've been trying to make a habit out of spending an hour outside with my dogs & chickens when I get home from work & before the chickens put themselves to sleep. Integration is going well so far, even with Memnoch attempting to assert dominance over the adult females. I was a little shocked that those instincts kicked in so soon (he's just 3 months old today), but I've been pretty shocked with how fast everything happens with chickens so far! Memnoch is also shaping up to be a regular sized rooster & not a bantam. He's already bigger than Odysseus & I'm waiting to see if he figures this out & decides not to run away from Ody one day & instead decides to fight. Hopefully that won't happen. There have only been 2 bullying incidents since I started integrating & fingers crossed that's all I'll have to deal with.

Little Sparta has imprinted on me pretty hard. The 3 younger chicks imprinted on each other really hard, but she is constantly fly/hopping on to me even when I'm not kneeling or bent over. She can actually make it from the ground to my chest in 1 go. I've always thought the size of my chest was pretty ridiculous & pointless, but I guess it's the perfect perch for this little gal. She's just so friendly with me & adorable. I think the d'Anvers are my new favourite breed now. I almost want a flock of them, but then I imagine I'll look like the crazy bird lady in the park with birds perched all over her & think my family might have issues with that. ;)

I hope everyone is doing well in this heat!

Hang in there small minded people are not worth wasting your time over, just let them go on the merry way. Karma, karma, karma, it does come back around!

Wow, that reminds me of my daughters accident years ago, 16 year old who had his drivers license for three weeks came around a corner and knocked their car off the road into a tree with his Dads big work van. My oldest daughter got the ticket, even though it happened in an instant, and her car was hit almost on the back fender, the cop said she was way over on his side..... really, how is that even possible! We did ask our attorney if he thought we could fight it in court, but the kids dad was assistant minister to the local church, and he said it would end up being a popularity contest that we would not win. So, you learn to let things go in a big way! Hopefully he has not killed anyone since this accident, as I doubt he learned anything from it.

Glad your littles are somewhat getting along, they are all beautiful birds, and I hope they continue to help you along your road of recovery.

@uzisuzuki I find it interesting about your young roo. One of the Fiesty Fifteen young cockerels started crowing at week 7, although not very well sounded like someone stepping on a crow. I thought wow that seems early, then yesterday I observed him mounting one of his young pullets flock mates. Apparently he has been watching his pops, it seems awfully early for that to me. That being said, this group is more advanced in what they know at this age compared to their parent flock. The chicks being raised by the broody will be further advanced than the 15. It has been pretty amazing to watch everything come full circle. What a great experience!

So, I did put a gallon jug in the coop last night around 9 ish it was 79 in there and the adults on the top roosts were hot. I failed to go back out and see what the temp dropped to later. Will have to keep experimenting.

@suncatcher how scary about your daughter! Crazy all the drunk drivers on the road still.

People are pretty amazing with how dishonest they can get. I was told by my family (because I have no memory for a decent chunk of time before and after the accident) that the story the guy gave the cops was flimsy and implicated himself. But it was a Friday evening, no one else stopped to be a witness or help (the other guy didn't even help - I apparently had to pull myself out of the wreckage), and because the entire lower half of my face was no longer attached to my skull and I was probably pretty out of it due to the significant amount of brain trauma at the scene, the cops sent a major ticket with my body to the ER. They never even stopped by to get a statement from me later on. Just easier to collect $500+ from the girl who can't defend herself by threatening her with prison time. The other guy wasn't hurt and had minimal damage to his vehicle. My car had flipped and wrecked so bad that all I heard the entire time I was in hospital was that I was lucky to be alive.

Sometimes I think, well, he has to live with what he did. Other days, I can't walk or I can't remember how to do simple tasks or I'm trying to eat and everything's just falling down my chin because I don't have any feeling in the lower half of my face anymore and I remember that I also have to live with what he did. I think I'm more disappointed in our legal system, though, than I am in the character of random strangers. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised that how cops and lawyers operate.

I'm continually surprised by him. He started crowing while they were still inside in the brooder boxes and it's just now finally starting to sound like an actual crow instead of an alien squeal from the movie Aliens. So far, he only tries mating/dominating the adult hens. When he just does the little wing drop to them, they kind of stand there like they're super unimpressed. When he does try to mount the, they freak out and it's kind of hilarious because I've never seen the hens act like that before. He doesn't try this with his twin or the smaller 3 - maybe he just knows they aren't mature enough to mate yet? It really had been fun to watch the whole process from egg to chicken. :)

Uzi,

I had a good LOL at the crazy pirate beard your little fellow wears with his dapper finest feathers. He sure is something. Makes me smile to see him. Your other littles look to be coming along quite nicely. Glad as well that they are getting along with the adults.

There is way to much uncaring in this world these days. I am one of those that will stop to render aid or at least call the cops to help. I do not understand people most of the time. So many are have a "me first and me only" kind of attitude never thinking of others. Bunch of losers in my sometimes not so humble opinion.

Keep your chin up and keep plugging along. Things have a way of working out.

Uzi - I cannot believe your story, how traumatic and f$&k them for not stopping, karma is a bit$$ and they will get theirs in the end. After all what comes goes around. You cannot walk away from something like that and not be cosmically changed on the most radical level and yet simple levels, small things mean more. Quality time with family, friends and animals who all reaffirm who we are at our core when nobody else is watching is who you surround yourselves with so that you may heal. That is the most important thing take time for you and what is important to you, life is too short to be worried about those people who know nothing about you nor should they know anything about you. They are not worthy, KEEP ON STEPPING!
