Dogs are louder then my hens
As well as tragic. I live a block away from colfax

Sorry, Kingkoopa sounded like a manly Mario name. I wish I could take some of your hens, I have fallen in love with EE's. I'll ask my hubby, but I'm not sure he will allow me to bring in another chicken for awhile after the mauled wing fieasco. :( Can you post some pictures of your lovely little girls?

Good morning fellow chicken lovers. I thought I would give you a bandit update.

This is her eating with our baby flock. They still sleep in the garage and I wake them up with the sun. They usually follow me like little duckies to the chicken run, but my 16 month old spilled a bunch of food on the ground. As you can see she is healthy and happy. She really didn't want to be isolated from her sisters, so put them together. Given their breeds, they all have sweet temperaments and don't pick on eachother. No like my big girls. Also, I would have taken one of my big girls to the vet and spent $1200 if I needed to because they made it to adulthood, braved the winter and have given me many, many eggs. With the chicks, although I love them, I do know that their lives are very delicate and I just couldn't justify the money on a chick. No one has to agree with me, but I did what I thought was right. He life meant enough to me that I spent about $100 in medical and surgical supplies. I gave her a chance instead of culling her and I took pain management measures. I actually used the anesthetic on my middle toe to test it out before giving it to our chick. Should something happen to our flock that we can not treat at home, we would do vet care or euthanize. I also have the money to spend on the vet, but I disagree with the idea if you can spend money on an outrageous vet bill, you shouldn't have animals. I do however respect other people's opinions that counter mine. Thank you for all your support for bandit.

Nice job with her! Looks like she's doing great so far considering her ordeal.

Cochicx/Trish....Allyour chicks look like pullets to me! Haha! Cathy is right, they change daily! Can't wait to see what you end up with, they are all beautiful!.
I have another week to go with my broody sitting on the eggs from Cathy, I think a week. I can never remember if day one is the day you put them under the broody or the day after. I gave her eggs April 29th, late in the day so I think I will start to listen for chipping next Friday. I haven't candled or anything. I am just leaving the broody to it on her own.

Happy Friday everyone. How is everyone's gardens growing? I have my tomatoes and peppers and most everything else out in the garden.

My garden is going... Broccoli, kale, Chard, onions, herbs are in. Tomatoes and peppers next week. The garden is looking forward to the chicken compost!

My first oops rooster was a RIR whom I called Queen Bee. "She" ate first and the most and was not friendly, and i didn't figure out his gender until one of my friends pointed it out to me. He's going on 4 y.o.now, and he is still a perfect gentleman - to both me and his girls. My second oops rooster was an SS Roo, and while he was the most charming, extroverted and personable chick ever to hatch, he - and his sons - became the batterers from Hades, then Pho. Nowadays I am extremely leary of charming, friendly boy chicks, hoping more for the benignly indifferent type. Many of my Roos, however, are drawn to and seem fond of people, especially if they don't have hens of their own, and the cocks that have flocks are very decent to their hens and good protectors. I am keeping my fingers crossed for your boy.

thanks, me too! I hope he turns out to be manageable, I've heard Australorps can be nice roos. I'll have to try your net technique!

So you trying to jinx my desire for a cockerel?! I know call me crazy, but want/need one, especially a blue egg gene carrying dude (that would be nice). I am wondering about the white one being a male, that was Percheron Chicks guess. As far as the broody, I believe the count starts the day after you load her up with eggs. Just like when you incubate. How exciting, we passed on Cathy's eggs as we didn't have a broody or time for another incubation round and of course have had two Broodies since then. One is very serious, been having to pull her out of the nest boxes at feeding time or she won't eat. Oh well that is how it works sometimes. Good luck with your broody can't wait to see pictures. I have garden envy, you have a great garden space and lots of sunlight! Anyway, we haven't gotten ours in yet, been working on our greenhouses. Hoping to get our starts planted soon.
COCHix, I bought a cheap ($16), large, telescoping fish net on Amazon, and I started carrying it with me - in its shorter configuration - when I went down to the coops to do chores. I, too, have scars on my legs (and holes in my pants), both old and new, and I was becoming so fearful - and angry with my Roos - that chores were a burden and my Roos were endangered. The net is not really convenient to carry around, but for awhile I wouldn't go anywhere without it. These Roos attacked even my large LGD, which really made me mad. Sooo, initially when a bird flew at me, I just stuck out the net, caught him, and held him down for a few minutes; not one of them ever got up and attacked again right away, but they might the next day, or even a little sooner. The last couple of birds I pinned, I put a weight on the net and left them pinned while I went about my chores. It didn't hurt them, I felt safe and comfortable and in control, and when I let them up, they went flying the heck out of there. I let my dog sniff them when they are pinned, and I think she learns to recognize the offenders, and they learn some respect. Not one has attacked me in the last few weeks, but what I really want is for them to get out of my way when they see me coming. Some do now, but some I still manipulate with the net, pushing them off the hens at feeding time and shoving them out of the way when they start hovering. The net gives me so much control with these guys, and I am happy. Looking forward to the day when I can leave The Net on the wall and be safe with just my dog. And of course The Net is a godsend to me for just catching chickens. If anyone called me wimpy, though, I would be hard pressed to disagree.
Thanks for the advice and suggestions, I admit I am not afraid of the roo. I am just more mad at him. After ;)all we raised him from day one, gave him more girls than he ever knew what to do with, eliminated all of his competitors, etc. I figured he would show some appreciation or respect. ;)
Some exciting news today, I got my first quail eggs. Just shy of six weeks. I don't know yet how many females I have in total but I got two little eggs this morning. I'll probably have to separate them soon as the boys are starting to get a little feisty. They still have two more weeks to grow out. Gives me a little more time to mentally prepare. :( Here's a few shots of my girls from their first trip outside a while back.
Cute babies and congrats on the eggs.

Here are some shots from yesterday....I know the first two aren't the best.

@Percheron chick what do you think on th white one, as far as the tail or lack of tail feathers. Is the rumpless gene a dominant gene? I believe I have seen a comb starting to develop as well.
