Colorado

I have chicks outside early on....some with a mama some a heat lamp. All of them spend a lot of time out from under the heat source.

The forecast has us improving greatly and even hitting 80 this next week.

Jsat, what breeds are the chicks?? I keep all cold hearty breeds but read that some bantam breeds don't do as well in the cold.

Disappointed hatch. 2 doing well almost a week old. By their color unfortunately appear to be males. The 2 pips quit. 2 clears, 3 quitters (all close to fully developed) and one late addition with 10 days to go.

Sebastapol geese are very interesting to me. I only ever had Toulouse. Pretty standard looking and actually pretty mellow compared to Canadian wild geese.

On another note..... I am considering options within my chicken flock. There are 4 that would really do better if they could get out more to range.
They lay well and just turned 2.

The very colorful EE, the barred rock and 2 Iowa Blue that look like small BA. The Iowas are not in the pic.
If anyone is interested please PM me.
They are good birds. Just not so good with my super docile breeds.

Got the last 2 eggs to hatch! The very last egg was a malposition, so I had to give it a little help. I'm hoping it pulls through the hatch completely & survives to be moved into the brooder with the other 2 chicks. The first chick really needed some brooder mates. There's only so long I could keep it in the cowl neck of my hoodie!

Yes, the peahens eggs are huge compared to my tiny chicken eggs! I have 5 now & once the malpositioned chick finishes up either way, I'll be cleaning out the incubator & seeing if I can fit at least 3 of those eggs in it. Fingers crossed! I'm officially quitting my job next month (HR blamed my being disabled for the situation I'm in instead of my manager for being a bigot), so if I get some healthy good looking peas to hatch I can make some extra money selling fertile eggs.

Hope the snow didn't make things too difficult for anyone! I know we need the moisture, but I could have done without the freezing temps that followed!

Congrats on a fine hatch Uzi!
It is a shame that you are being forced out of your job. I do hope you are able to find a less stressful job.
Sometimes a change ends up being a really good thing.

Thanks! I'm only positive on where 1 of the eggs came from (Sparta lays such tiny eggs, can't mistake them for a different hen's), so it should be interesting to see what they end up looking like!

I'm very disappointed about the job situation as well. I grew up at Wildlife & spent the majority of my working career at Wildlife. I'm sad that a place that was essentially my second home is now a place that makes me physically ill from the stress, discrimination. I'm also a little disappointed in myself for getting my hopes up that HR would actually do anything besides blame my disabilities. But, you're right. Change is good & after this year I need a change. :)
