Colorado

I called Joe to inquire about his operation. http://cosprings.craigslist.org/grd/3519141685.html I was just inquiring about his layout. He became fairly defensive when I asked if I could come see his layout. He told me it was really none of my business and he doesn't care who flags him as he isn't a rescue so doesn't have to answer to anyone.

I asked about coop. He doesn't have a coop. He lets them free range and live in an old RV until the coyotes get them or they die. He says he's lost some to the cold... now we all know here that losing chickens to cold is highly unusual. It's so sad as I imagine that gently raised chickens are no match for the great unprotected outdoors.

He then tells me he knows who keeps flagging him. It's a neighbor who he gave him a rabbit once that a coyote got to.

I asked how he feeds them and he told me that Wal-Mart sells chicken feed for $10 and if not there, he'll go to that other place on 24. I asked, 'which one?'. He fumbled for the name of it. In fairness to him, he could just have been flustered. But I then told him that Wal-Mart does not sell feed for $10 and hasn't for a very long time. He told me I was wrong and that he was just there.

I then asked if he would let me come see his place if I were drop off some chickens. A resounding No.

So my initial feeling is that there is something wrong. Do not give your chickens to this guy if you care a hoot for them. Even if you don't, give them to one of us who culls gently. They don't deserve hell and to die horrible deaths.

Well the ad is already gone.
Is he the one that asks for any and all animals? Is he keeping them or just taking them in and eating them? Always sad when you know some one out there is doing this, but have a hard time finding them. I bet he doesn't let anyone out there, just meets people in parking lots to pick up the animals.

He just called me back and says he gets feed at cost, which is why the feed is so low. I invited him to join our group here to learn. I also told him that I wouldn't be comfortable in placing chickens with him unless I did a site visit. I know that sounds weird as we are talking chickens.

This time, I reiterated that a chicken raised in a backyard coop is not capable of understanding the dangers of free ranging. And what I mean by free ranging in this instance is wild roaming.

He says he'll call me back and that he wants to learn. I told him again that his feed costs are too high for what he says he has. He says he goes through 80-100 pounds of feed for 20 chickens a week that wild roam.

I'd heard about somebody putting up an ad for unwanted chickens and goats and then selling them at the Calhan auction, don't know if it's the same guy or not, but that makes more sense than leaving them out to die

I have been approached about taking in a crowing silver wyandotte hen... yup, a crowing hen that is suffering from hormonal issues. :) Now I do know that occasionally they do suffer from hormonal issues but I just suspect denial in this case.

Here is my tale on the guy, he's lying. Best case is that he is eating the creatures, maybe he is reselling or worst case - training dogs with them. If he actually gets on a chicken site and isn't looking out for the welfare of the animals, then he will know what to say and how to say it to avoid suspicion.

Too many red flags... he hasn't called me back but that doesn't mean he isn't trolling. He says he's been on here before for advice but like most everything else... you can be given all the advice in the world but until you do it, you won't understand a thing.

Wow!
Coloradogal thanks for posting about the craigs list guy. I have been watching all of the drama on CL and wondering about Joe. Glad you asked such direct questions! Go you! Hopefully this guy will stop posting if he is doing anything dishonest. :) I think if more people asked to see his "loving home" he would know to stop.
