Oh my goodness, where are you?  I agree, family and those in need if you're giving them away.  Someone here gives extras to the local volunteer fire department, which I think is a great idea, I think it was Dennarahl but could be mistaken.

Nope, not me. I think its someone one the springs area if I remember right

does anyone have silkies in a flock with their reg layers? Can they be in a coop together? Do the silkies need lower roosts or have different requirements then the layers?  I want a silkie, but have no room....so this is just for future plans. lol

I have silkies in both of my coops with the regulars. They do just fine. The only issue I have is that some of them won't/can't roost up with the others. In one coop there is a lower roost for them. In the other coop I will eventually add a ladder, but for now I just pick her up and put her on it.

Boy what a crazy day. Woke up, ate, cleaned baby chickie bums, went to a birthday party, then had to work on our goose hut. Yesterday we found the remains of a frozen soft shell goose egg in the hut. We thought we had a little longer, so the goose lady doesn't have a nest box. Oops! Building a nest box meant taking the front off of their wacky shack and also removing the wire floor that never worked as hoped. Man was there a lot of poop in there. We also found four more eggs that had rolled down into some cracks. Its really no wonder the big boy has been so nasty coming out of there in the morning. He's been protecting the nest. We didn't have enough time to finish building, so we put the front back on, and we'll get to finish tomorrow. After dinner, I got to clean some more chickie bums. I'm hoping to have time to upload pictures tomorrow, but we'll see.

Hmm. Well, whoever it was I liked the idea :)

Adam7, I think there are directions for building a cabinet incubator here on BYC, some use compact refrigerators and some use wood, but I wonder if scanning them would help you decide what you think about the one you found for sale?

I have never kept geese, had a friend in high school whose folks always had a flock of "guard" geese but I don't recall them ever having special housing, I think they just slept in the barn in a stall designated for them and got clean straw once a week or so. At the time they were considered a poor family because they "had to" take in horses for boarding to make ends meet, but to me it was a great life and I loved visiting there. I thought they were lucky.

Understand having a day full. Part of my day yesterday was spent helping Bob unload his tools. He has 3 big toolboxes and 3 smaller ones, and they are really heavy. Heavy equipment mechanics don't have wrenches, they have WRENCHES :) The socket drawer alone weighs well over 100 lbs, it gets taken out of the box before we lift it down from the pickup bed.

Shed kit did not make it, it is supposed to be here today now.

Uhgg! tools are heavy. And he does heavy equipment, so the stuff is BIG! My tools are small in comparison

Got a little done yesterday before going to the Hanover vs elbert Basketball games. Unfortunatley we lost.

Got started on modifying the coop in pen 4, and sorted through the scrap pile and found enough 2x4 scraps to build the nest box for pen 4.

Gave the chickens another bag of mulch to scratch through.

O.K., I've been wondering about this one (pastey bum chicks). Whenever I've started chicks on MEDICATED chick starter, at least some have had pastey butt. The last 3 or 4 batches I've hatched out, there hasn't been a single pastey in the crew. The only difference has been that I started them on UN-MEDICATED broiler starter.

Any thoughts or similar results?

Figured out what the incubator is. It is a medical incubator. boekel 131400. It's very hard to find any info on it. Everything I find online says it has a pilot light? Does that mean this is gas operated? It won't work for me I that's the case.

this is the first batch that has had this many problems for me. the first three batches of chicks i only had one or two per batch that needed looked at once or twice. the fourth batch didnt have any problems, and these guys do. i think part of it is that there are so many silkies and cochin types. i also forgot to put acv in the water the first day, which i did with all the other batches. other than that ive always used medicated for the first few weeks and then switched to flock raiser
