Just bought some land down there and hope to make it our perm home soon. Was wondering how garden-friendly it is. I hear there is a really short growing season.

Everyone has greenhouses here to extend the season...and for deer proofing!! I have plans for a greenhouse of my own....maybe this sping

Adam and I are in Colorado Springs (I'm actually in Security); I'm not sure what zone he's in but I'm in RS-5000, residential suburban. 10 chickens, NO ROOSTERS. Definitely check with HOA's....they can be downright unpleasant to deal with...

Chickens are considered livestock according to city/county ordinances.

I am zoned the same as you . And technically I am in security as well. Howdy neighbor

Fortunately not so much as of yesterday. Unless an HOA conflicts, all of unincorporated El Paso county is now 10 hens allowed no roosters. If you are on 2.5 acres or more you are qualifies for hobby farm status and there is no restrictions.

The more I look around on the BYC website at breeds. The more i realize I may have california grays and not barred rocks. Here is a picture. What do you guys think?
The barring just doesnt seem to be distinctive enough. They were a bit young in this picture also. They are larger now but still dont have the distinctive barring on them.

Thank you, lovincolorado, for your response. I guess we'll plan to set up a greenhouse. I'm looking forward to starting my mini-farm. More chickens, maybe some ducks.

so many barred rock types that it's hard to keep them all separate. =) They look like my cuckoo marans and my mutt babies.

Where did you get them from as chicks? Did they tell you they were barred rocks? I have never really heard of California Greys before. Would egg color help identify?
