Colorado

Where did you get them from as chicks? Did they tell you they were barred rocks? I have never really heard of California Greys before. Would egg color help identify?
doing a little more research. California grays tend to lay a white egg and these lay a little bit darker egg than my RIR. I think they are BR now, but just hatchery stock. I got them from a lady off of Judge ore road in Falcon. My california white should have been a leg horn as well as my roo should have been a hen. I guess everything happens for a reason. Maybe we will get some cool looking chicks from the combination. Time will tell. My kids have candling day and hatching day on the celendar already.

Just rub it in why don't you ...
It was a long time coming. We actually moved here so we could keep my littlest girl in the school she was in before. She is a special needs child and because of funding for the school districts we were told we either needed to move into district or go to a school in our district, which was district 3, widefield. It is quite a long story but as it all turned out we spent a lot of money to move and keep here in the shcool she was in to begin with. Its amazing what you do for your children. The cool property along the creek is just a bonus. I guess I would never gotten into chickens as much as I have without all this happening. Strange how things work out. She gets to stay in her school where she can get the help she needs and I get some land to hunt and raise chickens on.

They have the dates for the eggs you gave me on the calender?! No pressure right!! What days do they have down for candling? I candled on day 7,14,17 last time...but days may change as sometimes I can't resist the urge to candle .. Lol

That's awesome you guys went to so much trouble for your daughter. I would like to think I would do the same if I was in your shoes. I looked for property when I was home shopping but I just couldn't find something in my price range on any kind of acreage. Heck I should just be happy I own my own home. I bought it when I was 24(I'm 26 now) and I got a great deal. Lots of sweat equity. My plan is to sell after the markets pick back up and move to something with some land.

A plan is good. mine was made up for me at the time. my house is definately a fixer upper. It has lots of prpblems. I just have to take them one at a time.

The more I look around on the BYC website at breeds. The more i realize I may have california grays and not barred rocks. Here is a picture. What do you guys think?
The barring just doesnt seem to be distinctive enough. They were a bit young in this picture also. They are larger now but still dont have the distinctive barring on them.
I am really new to this so this is just an observation; I have a friend with Marans and they look like that, maybe more barring. But the way I tell her Marans from her Barred Rocks is the Marans have grey legs and the BR have yellow legs. I have no idea what color legsCalifornia grays have, so I am probably no help?

I'm also zoned same as you guys (RS-5000). I'm further north in the springs, but I'm technically about 4 houses outside the city limit and HOA.
