Colorado

Hi Ashdoes! I'm in Peyton too. I don't have birds yet, but we're planning for Beltsville small white turkeys.

What vet do you use now? I have 2 dogs myself.

I think it's called Falcon Animal Hospital, right behind Falcon Elementary. I like the vet I saw, and the office staff was nice. But, for cost of two dogs to get their yearly shots, it was higher then I've ever paid. Although, I have always used a base vet, so my idea of reasonable could be skewed. For a regular office visit the price was fine, so I decided for shots we would continue to use Fountain vet and for sickness or anything we'll use the Falcon vet. I don't mind the drive out to Fountain, since my in-laws live there and I'm out there once a week anyways.

Greetings... long time no see.

A bit of a high-jack here.

I am in need of a new Vet for my cat here in CS. Anyone have someone they like/trust?

thanks,

Mo
I use Carefree Cats. I think they are off of old farm rd. They are well priced, specialize in cats, have an awesome boarding program if you need it and are just easy to work with for rush care. I have a cat with stomach issues and when he has a flare they can usually get him in for his shot that morning.

I guess I'm going to go to the swap at Sweeny's this Saturday, unless something comes up. I'll bring my older pullets and if I have any of the pullets that will be 3 weeks old Saturday I may bring those as well, I still have the last 3 Delawares and Speckled Sussex and the mystery chick that I hazard a guess is probably a GLW cockerel, although at this age it's pretty hard to tell. Chick did you decide whether to go?
I will be there! Just deciding which chicks to bring. Oldest batch is a given. They are five weeks old now. Then there are the chanteclers and my s/r mix hatch. I think I have room for everyone plus bins in the car... This will be an Adventure!

And DH will make sure I don't come home with more than I leave with.

x2 - certainly worth keeping an eye out but Cochins are generally more mellow than some others. I have one in my laying flock (we call her Li'l Lotta') and have some shipped eggs in the incubator now, because we are so fond of the one we have.

Ok, thanks guys! I'm already pretty attached to her so I sure hope she's fine! I just had all of them out and they were wandering around the floor pecking and flapping. She moved around with the rest of the group and interacted a bit, but it was all more mellow. I'll just keep an eye on her and try not to worry. :)

This is the main reason I got chickens was to help me in the garden. We are loaded with grasshoppers in the summer time and I have tried everything to get rid of them but I always loose. Gettng the chickens with help me with those peskie bugs that are all around and the extra bonus is that they lay eggs.

Woot woot! I picked up three more chicks from Big R in Monument. She said they were two weeks old! I didn't know they sold them that old, but it helps me out. She said they are pretty sure they had white leghorns and buff orpingtons. I attempted to get the buff orpingons, but I guess I could have a surprise. I'll post some pics when I get home and maybe you guys can help me play the guessing game!

Also, is it possible for a chick to have a tick? I swear that one of the pullets I just got from Big R has a twitch in it's head. On the ride home I kept hearing a pecking on the box. I opened it up, and she wasn't pecking but her head was quickly moving to the side and the side of her beak was hitting the box. I watched her for a bit and it seems like a pretty constant twitch between 30 seconds to a minute or two. Possible?

On a side note: I had to get rid of Sheldon, the duck. He was just too incredibly messy. I guess next time I'll do my research before purchasing a cute baby animal. He did go to a good home with 2 other ducklings his age. Whew - never again though.

Sometimes baby chicks will appear to have a tick when they aren't drinking enough water. When you get him home make sure it gets some water. I want guarantee it will help but I have seen some chicks turn around. Usually it's after they were shipped but, give it a try and see can't hurt:)

I heard about an animal poultry swap at the Elizabeth Big R on the 17th and a chicken chat work shop on the 16th. The rep from Nutrena products is putting it on. Anyone going to that swap? I think they are doing it once a month. I guess they had one last month that was just crazy, but I didn't know about it.

Elbertchick,

Thank you! I appreciate it. I'm not sure that it will help because they were already two weeks old which means they've been sitting at Big R for a while. I guess the Big R in Monument doesn't sell as many chicks. Hoping for the best. Otherwise I just need a good name other than "the twitchy chick."
