Colorado

Off to Ft Lupton in a little while for Heritage Fair. A very short break, but still a break. Time to relax and listen to the public ask questions and talk to their kids.

A sample discussion.......(overheard) Parent talking to kid: See, this is how they dressed during the Civil War........Then turning to one of us the parent asks, you are fighting for the south right? you aren't wearing blue...... I respond, This is a depiction of a militia unit in the Revolutionary war, not the civil. War. Different war. The north and the South fought together in this one. The parent then turns to the kid and tell him that he shouldn't listen to us, we obviously didn't learn anything in school...........

We do reenactments and are always amazed at what people don't know.
I am cool or warm (depending on the season) and comfortable in my cotton and wool garments. Folks dresses in all kinds of polyester and other hot man made materials are amazed that I am not suffering. I quit wearing man made fabric long ago because it works against me instead of with me.

Colorado was a territory (I think) during the civil war. New Mexico took a bunch of it. I doubt there were any zoning laws or HOA's at that time. Keep 'em coming Wendell.

Samsr,  :lau   !!   Actually been there and done that only it was the Cockatiel in the kitchen with the math homework because the kid got distracted and left and the teacher DID call and ask as to why the homework was "a bit" shredded.

How are the Hatches going out there folks?
I have 18 left in the bator out of 21. 2 were not fertile and one dud. Lockdown is Saturday evening. I will need to remove the fan at that point because i dont want a chick to step in the fan and lose a leg. The fan is just sitting in the bottom of the bator, as it is actually a still air bator with my fan modification. I hope i did something correct and i have some hatch. Time will tell.

Hi Danika!
I'm Littleton/unincorporated Jefco as well. I just got 2 chicks, enough to provide eggs for our small family and allow us room to grow our flock on e these 2 stop laying. I've wanted chickens for a long time but I have a new baby and I didn't want to deal with jumping through hoops for a zoning variance.

I can recommend a good avian vet if you don't have one already. And I can tell you about the requirements for chickens in our area in case you haven't called the zoning department yet.

Hooray for Jefcos new change of law!

Where did you get your shipped eggs from? This was my first experience using MyPetChickens for fertile hatching eggs. I must say, after spending $50 on a dozen eggs, that I am highly disappointed with the quality of the eggs. All of the eggs were so porous, I thought I was looking at a piece of pumice. I went ahead and put them into the incubator because I had a batch of copper marans that I got locally. I must say though, that I am not very optimistic about any of them hatching.

I was correct in my disappointing assumption of MyPetChicken. Of the 13 "blue" breeds that they shipped only 3 showed sign of life after 10 days. One could argue that maybe it was my incubator but I had a dozen maran eggs in there and all 12 are showing great signs of life. Plus I had a 75% hatch rate on the last batch in my homemade incubator. Of the 10 "blue" breeds that didn't take, 5 appeared to be infertile to me, 2 had blood rings but nothing else, 1 was just a scrambled mess, and 2 were early quitters (looks like about day 3-5 quitters). Needless to say, I will not be ordering "fertile" hatching eggs from MyPetChicken ever again. Don't waste your money if you're considering it.

MyPet Chicken Review:
1. Shipping was poor in my opinion. Eggs were individually wrapped in bubble wrap and just stacked in a box. I've seen more successful ways of shipping eggs!
2. The eggs were extremely porous and appeared to be of low quality.
3. Several of the eggs were small in size compared to some "standard" eggs. I have some that were only 42g on day 0.
4. Price - $24 per dozen and then they charged $18 for shipping....plus taxes of course.

That had me laughing so hard.

. I am so sorry for the dissappointment.

Bummer Scott. Shipped eggs are always iffy, and I have had varying luck. All the Buttercup eggs failed, I had one showing movement a week ago that didn't make it to hatch, the rest quit early or never started - I moved most into the hatcher knowing I probably wouldn't get a hatch on the off chance I had missed something, but it was not to be. The other group so far has 2 Black Silkies and 3 RIR hatched, 2 more RIR pipped, and I am hoping my Cochin hen hatched her 2 RIR and 1 Black Silkie - I heard peeping but that doesn't always mean a successful hatch, so until I see the little fuzzy butts I won't count them.

Meanwhile, feeling adventurous, I ordered Cackle's 25 Rainbow Layers and the Hatchery Surprise, and surprised I am! I expected another 25 chicks, and got 37 chicks, 2 ducklings, and 2 turkey poults (have to be, too big to be chickens). I am just guessing on breeds, there are some pale yellow chicks with feathered legs that could be Buff Cochins or Light Brahmas, some clean legged crested chicks that may be Golden Laced Polish, looks like a few Black Australorps/sex links/?, Easter Eggers, Speckled Sussex, Buff Orpingtons, and White Leghorns or Delawares or White Rocks, and probably others. I looked at the pics of ducklings and poults on Cackle's website and it looks like there are 2 Rouen ducklings and 2 Bronze Broad Breasted poults - just guessing, and the poults could possibly be Narragansetts but I think more like the former.

Fun fun fun! :)

For those that have been to a DUH for the chicken swap... Is it an event we could just go to and look at all the animals and see what its all about if we aren't planning on swapping, selling or buying?
