Swimming pool issue solved. In a redneck sort of way.

Good idea to put it in the corner so the water drains outside the yard. I bet they slept under you laying nests, would make a nice corner, just add some straw and I am betting that is where they will bed down at night.

Pozee, something liker P funk has will work, it doesn't have to be big, it does help to keep the water more clean if it is bigger, but just enough so they can get themselves wet and dunk their heads in it.

Swimming pool issue solved. In a redneck sort of way.

I used three of them and a kiddie pool for my two pekings and runner. I was only able to fill the kiddie pool up 4 times during the winter but the black tubs were refilled and cleaned once a day, maybe twice depending on the mud level. They work fine.

When the hoses are frozen, I just lugs about 10 gallons of water. Each tub takes about 2 and I used 4, of very hot water to clean them of the crud. My ducks laid all winter long so they must have been happy enough.

Now with the warmer temps, they are like little kids when they get in the pool in the morning. I usually have to refill the pool every other day. My drake only uses the pool to do his manly duties so he tends to sleep near it waiting for one his mate to get in and then he serendipitously opens an eye and ever so quackly, jumps in. I'm so onto his game. =)

LOL!!! People who think ducks are dumb just don't know them very well.

P-Funk I agree that placement next to the fence helps lessen the mud making in the pen. Great if its on a slope. I like to put those big rubber waterers on a pallet so the water that spills around it isn't so easy for the ducks to muck up. Also when its elevated you can siphon it out with a hose easier, saves labor. Make sure those little ones have something to climb on so they can get out.

I need a bit of help. My grandson's kindergarten class tried to hatch eggs as a class project. They received 25, and out of that 25, only one hatched yesterday. (Apparently other teachers kept coming in and opening the incubator....guess you can't teach common sense...) I don't even know what breed it is. It came out of a brown egg. It's black and white... four toes, and feathers on the legs and feet. Can't tell what the top of the head is like because it's still sort of matted down.

We're trying to find a "friend' for "Henry" to help reduce some anxiety. I know Murdoch's here in Parker had chicks yesterday/Friday, but all they have now are ducks, geese, and turkeys. And the other feed store in town is closed today. Does anyone in Parker/Franktown/Elizabeth area have any week olds or younger they might be willing to part with/sell? We only want to get one more to put in with Henry (who I sincerely hope is more of a "Henrietta"). I'd like to get one as soon as possible. Otherwise, his teacher is going to travel to some farm an hour away to pick one up. So, I guess I need to know in the next 45 minutes or so... if anyone is online. (I know this is short notice, so totally understand if this isn't possible.)

Sorry about the uh.... really bad hatch rate. Unfortunately, I don't think common sense is common anymore.

I wish I was closer, I just got chicks Friday. Are the other eggs still in the incubator? It is possible others will hatch, often one will be an early bird (I know, go ahead and groan LOL) and the rest will start over the next 24 hours or so.

The others are still in the incubator. I suggested she leave them in for a few more days. There were only 5 of the 25 that ever showed any signs of life, so we're hoping at least one more of those hatch. (By the way, I think Henry is a Cochin.)

14 out of the 18 have hatched so far. 1 more is zipping and 2 of the other 3 have pipps. The last one is doing quite a bit of rocking at the moment. I wouldnt be surprised if all 18 that made it to lockdown yesterday hatch out by tomorrow morning. One of these was an experiment from one of my friends down the street on the fertility of his eggs. His roo is apparently a little lazy. One out of three for him. So far I have 14 out of 18 hatched. I will let everyone know how many finally hatch. Its looking good so far.

There should be enough two week old chicks for Chickenfest.
