You wanna talk about COLD hardy? Last night when I went out to shut my coop door for the night it was 1 degree F. This morning when I went out to open the door and feed it was -9 F. I apparently didn't see one of my 15 week old white plymouth rock hens curled up in the snow last night. She came happily clucking over to me this morning after staying out side all night in -5 F - -10 F. That is what I call a tough bird.

I did that as well once (so far anyway). Greeted by a very happy bird that was ready to get into the coop for some food! It warmed up to 9 overnight up here and the wind is kicking up so got the fire rolling and now maybe the cat will stop pestering me to warm up his throne by the fire.

Just a guess here, but a few pages back there was a Colorado Springs CL ad that was selling turkey hatching eggs, she may have some poults to sell this spring. She listed Bourbon Reds as some of the breeds she keeps.

Some silkie eye candy, these cockerels are from porcelain breeding. Though one looks splash and the other 2 are reddish buff. We'll see what they throw for chick color!

I particularly like the front left cockerel in the first pic - think he's also in the middle in the second? Like his shape. The Barnevelder is so pretty, too!

Our schedule was moved up....

Yesterday my oldest son and I prepared the breeding pens and placed each breeding cockerel with his harem. In a couple of weeks we will start collecting eggs for hatching and do a test incubation. Its still pretty early for me to have chicks, which makes me nervous, as we all know about the temperature swings and crazy weather we usually experience in early spring.
