I noticed my hens have not been going into the coop at their regular time for about a week now. Last night I watched the Roo guard the door & pecked at any hen that tried to go in. I had to get the stick to clear him from the door so the girls could go in.
Any thoughts as to why he's do this?!?!?!

Little guys going to end up in soup if he's not careful!!

Anyone have eggs in NoCo?

No ideas on why from me, but you could try a timeout for him to reset the pecking order, but that just might make him a real monster when he comes back in...... hummmm, perhaps carrots and garlic is the way to go. Or, put in a second door for awhile.....

Because of the volume of exhibitors and classes, they allow you in the.day before or the day of depending and yo must vacate the day of or the day after so the next group can move in and gey ready for their show.

He is keeping all the hens out, or all but one? If all, if you have a way to do it, I would confine him the last 30 minutes before they go to roost, and when all the hens are in, let him into the coop. If all but one, it is possible he is trying to entice her to brood a clutch of eggs and keeping all the others away to protect her. Unless you have a way to separate him and his chosen one, you can still try the same protocol. After a week or so, "forget" to confine him and see what happens. If he goes right back to keeping them out of the coop, he may have written the recipe for roo stew. Maybe someone else has ideas why he would do this and how to fix it, to be honest I've never seen it and am just guessing what may help.

Welcome Nurse Chicky and Aacre. Lost of good info here. My first girls are laying fairly regular. Love my blue and greenish eggs. Have picked up a few strays that needed re-homing. Suncatcher, that little white thing is dropping eggs like clockwork She is setting the pace. I picked up 2 wyandottes and 2 australopes. Got a large brown one today. I have to put on the breaks, chicken math is catching up to me.
Nurse, any of those hardy breeds are fun. My only suggestion is have the coop ready before you start and allow enough room for at least twice what you think you want now. Chicken math is like a cold, you are gonna catch it.
