Colorado

Wendell so glad to read about your hatch. Hoping the next 40 goes even better.

All you guys hatching eggs is driving me crazy. I am hoping one of my hens goes broody soon (altho past history says it won't be til fall). Then I'm gonna try to find 6-8 fertile eggs somewhere to put under her. I don't have room for much of an increase in flock size, but if half of those are males then I can put a few in the freezer. LOL, with my luck those will probably all end up as hens and then I will have to give some away.

Welcome to all the new peeps. I don't post much anymore, but I try to keep up with what ya'll are doing. Busy, busy folks.

Hi everyone! My neighbor just tm'd me a photo: there's chicks at Murdoch's!
YAY!

I went in Murdoch's in Longmont the other day. They had a lot of chicks but luckily nothing I was interested in so I didn't come home with some. I have no more room in my brooder! We got our 25 mail order chicks today. No DOA surprisingly with the weather last night but 3 are questionable. I really don't expect 1 to last the night and really hoping the other two make it.

Here are some of them:

Here are most of the LF girls.

All black polish? I've never seen one like this. It has a head bump, clean legs, and all black. This pic makes it look lighter in some areas but in person it is pitch black. I can't find anything on their site that looks like this.

This is a mystery. Any ideas? It's back is a black and white chipmunk stripe.

This one looks like too many other ones to really know for sure.

This one has a lot of white. I'm leaning towards Ancona.

Here are some of the bantams. The bottom one I think is a blue americauna. It as fluffy cheeks but is really tiny. I don't know if it's one of our 5 bantam EE's or if it's just small. The top right one is a mystery as is the top two left ones. The dark one is a D'Anver we already had and the buff is a buff silkie we already had.

Here's all the bantams (I took the eco-glow out for a second to get a pic) The grey/white ones with visible wings are bantam white frizzle cochins. The white one on the far left I think is a sultan (she's in with the bantams because she is unsteady and was getting pushed around with the LF). You can see 2 that are definite EE's but the others I'm not sure about. We are supposed to have 5 of them. I tend to think it's the 2 mystery chicks plus the blue, and the other little white one is the last mystery.

oh. my. freakin'. dog. that was the cutest set of photos I've ever seen. I'm so happy I'll be able to succeed b/c of this site if I ever start new chicks. Did it take a long time to become pragmatic about the inevitable loss? I'd be giving them subqfluids or running them in to the e.r......sugar! do they need sugar? is their glucose low?

can't help it! gotta be a geek!

What you learn is a chick that needs help (more than a butt cleaned, some vitamins/molasses/vinegar in the water, or Corid if they show signs of coccidiosis) either doesn't survive no matter what you do, or it does only to become an unthrifty adult that you always have to coddle. That makes for poor livestock or expensive pets.

I've lost chicks I really didn't want to lose, and what's worse than losing them at a day or two of age, is having to put them down after spending weeks trying to "fix" them. They survive, but they don't thrive, and ultimately it is an unkindness and a huge waste of time, effort, and resources.

I'm pretty sure that your mystery chick is a silver spangled hamburg. I have two hens that started out looking just like that.

Trsturself, Those are awfully cute chicks!!!! I agree...... any with stripes are probably EE's.

Shylee, Thanks for posting that! Would be a great clinic to attend if one is just getting into chicks, or even know a thing or two about chickens! Wish I was closer!
