Colorado

TracieJS, I have started working toward flock feed with oyster shell on the side. Of course. I had all the girls on layer feed. The youngest ones were 8 weeks and they seem fine now. Starting to get more eggs on a regular basis. I can't even keep track of who is laying now. I'm no expert, but if you give them layer feed now, my experience is it shouldn't hurt them.

Suncatcher, the little black hen is almost the same size as the white. I didn't even think she was old enough to lay, but there they are. I have blue silkie in Camp that is about 6 months old and pretty sure she hasn't layed an egg yet. Her owner is really frustrated. We have been through six birds now to get her 3 layers. 2 were roosters, 1 lost to neighbors dogs and now the silkie not laying. Idenified the little black as hers, so she can claim a chicken that lays eggs. LOL

I'm right there with you! I'm in there every other day to see what chicks they have. I already have more than I should, so I'm resisting the urge. All this talk of hatching chicks isn't helping. lol. Good thing my husband tore our brooder apart to use the wood for something else!

On another note, I might be interested in raising meat rabbits. Murdoch's had rabbits last year, but they don't think they'll have them this year. Anyone know anyone with rabbits?
I am still tossing that idea around as well. Been thinking on that for a few years..... CL seems to have a lot of hutches for cheap too. My issue is the bears. I have a bear secure coop, but if I want rabbits, quail and bees and etc, I am going to have to do something Ft. Knoxie. Electricity is too spazzy up here so it needs to be solid on its own. I hope you do get rabbits. May I interest you in the Silver Fox? Seems like we need some in this area.....

Thank you Pozees and Mtn Margie! We are moving out to Peyton (so excited). I was hoping to free range them together today with a wire fence in between them but we got snow and the older girls are content to stay in their pen. We moved the new girls into a baby pool w a couple of inches of hay in the bottom to the basement so they have room to move around. I think I will take your advice and keep them separate until I am sure they are healthy. They look good except for some baby feathers still poking out. Good thing I love my husband because we weren't ready for these girls and had agreed no new animals until we moved. Sigh! At 12 weeks I believe they are good to eat regular layer feed correct?

I would not use layer until the pullets are at least 16 weeks old, and only if there are no males. I prefer an all-flock or grower formulation with free choice oyster shell and grit.

Wow, two pages to catch up on reading! We too had lots of frost last night, I think because of all the moisture in the air. Hope we get a warm spell here this coming week. Birds are back, the wild birds that is, isn't it kinda early???? The little nut hatchs, I think that is what they are, were here all winter, but seeing some bigger wild birds, just hope they can find some food, if not, I will have to feed them too! :D

I have a few Bantam Cochins still for sale, PM if you are interested. If you live close to Denver, Shylee raises Bantam Cochins, as does Carolyn (sp).

Egg production has picked up here too, but then when it gets super cold, like last night, they slack off for a few days.

Campleader, The little black hen was hatched late summer (I think), and those little ones lay fairly early, at least that has been my experience with Batam Cochins. Also, they go broody fairly early in the year too.

Welcome to all the newbies!!

Pozee, let me know if you have any blue egg layer mixes, I would be interested in one or two!

Hi, I live in Denver Colorado and I was hoping if anyone knew someone or is selling a bantam cochin. I already have a two standard cochins but I need a bantam cochin for showing purposes.

Thankyou

I have 2 bantam white cochins for sale. Straight run. One looks like it will be smooth and the other looks like it will be frizzled. They are almost 2 weeks old.

I have a friend in Parker that raises silver foxes, not sure if she has enough to sell but I'll ask her. I might have a contact for californians too if anyone is interested. I'll try to get the info together.

My back yard is surrounded by a six-foot wood fence. We needed that just to keep our escape-artist dogs "in" the yard!
Silver Foxes would be great! I had been focused on Californias, but the Silvers would work! I would hate to waste that fur, though. I might need to learn a new skill and figure out how to use it.
