Are you looking for good laying hens? You can't go wrong with any of them really, Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Easter Eggers, etc.

You might want to call them and ask what breeds they have in, and make your list from that information.

I agree, a colorful egg basket is always a good idea!!

ETA Welcome to BYC!!! You can learn just about everthing there is to learn about chickens here!

Walkers are just the nicest people. I used to tech for a clinic near there and when I was telling people what to feed their animals, Walkers always had the highest human grade quality ingredients based dog food with the lowest prices.

You'll like them a lot!

I wanted to throw this in here, we have a splash polish chick about 6 weeks old, that I've discovered is a male. He's getting horns! If anyone is interested please let me know, he's a bit small for the table and would rather find him a home now since I know for sure he's a he.
Thanks

Chicken math strikes again. Since we only had one lonely legbar hatch we ran to Murdoch's yesterday to get her a friend. They had GLW and Cuckoo marans. I was good and only got one GLW. But I looked at their sign and they were supposed to get in BLRW today. Guess where I went today? Yep, back to Murdoch's to pick up one of those. Unfortunately they didn't get their shipment in. I gotta run over there tomorrow and get one. :)

so what do you all think about 4 chicks a Rhode island red ,buff,Orpington, Americana, and silver laced Wyandotte ? would that be a good mixture of chicks or is there one of these I should not get?
We were thinking just two but we were advised to get a few more. We are going to have them for pets and also for the eggs.

I think that is a nice mixture of chickens for your little backyard flock, congrats on your decision, and who knows you might change your mind once you get to the store and actually see them! Is ok, get what appeals to you. I know for a fact your Buff Orpington and your RIR will lay tons of eggs, have never had the other two, so can;t speak from experience. Four should be able to keep themselves warm in the winter in a smaller coop too.

LOL, as long as you can keep the chicken math somewhat under control is ok. BLRW are hard to come by it seems..... Kiowa had some listed, of course I had to call....... but theirs were a no show too, something about the hatch not going well.
