Colorado

I should have got 3 last weekend at wardel's where they had lots of selection, the guy I got my rc leghorn and my wheaten ameracuna from had chocolate muscovy and someone I bought pumpkins from had pretty magpied and white muscovy. Dang it, my bf had to wait until yesterday to say, yes, we should get muscovy ducks if you can find some big enough to go in with the dp meaties.

Btw- my 8-9 week old dp meaties, started crowing at 5am yesterday afternoon. OMG. My caponizing equipment isn't here yet. I need to do something before they set off the chorus of I can do that louder and make my neighbors mad at me.

Dang it! Of the 4 silkies I hatched from Pozees eggs, all 4 turned out to be roos. The 2 I kept have such good form, and are so nice to the ladies (and me) that I don't want to get rid of one, but now I need to find a hen to put with them (among others).

The 2 black ones though need to find new homes. My friend has them but it seems she's trying to pawn them off on me. As if I need 2 more roosters!

My homemade automatic chicken door has been giving me a lot of problems lately. I think I finally got it working again after ripping the whole thing apart and redoing it. Wrote a blog post with more details (http://flamingarrowfarm.blogspot.com/2014/09/automatic-coop-door-more-details-and.html)

Got some fresh dill and cucumbers from a guy in town so I got some dill pickles started. Also canned some potatoes and tried my hand at making onion marmalade. I don't know how I feel about it. It had a little too much vinegar flavor for what I expected. I think next time I'll try a recipe that I pressure cook so I don't have to worry about the vinegar. I saw quite a few that sounded delicious and makes me want to top some asparagus or steak or chicken, etc with them.

There are times when an automatic door would be dreamy, but I love tending my now 47 chickens.

I picked up 6 more ayam cemani chicks yesterday! Little black puffballs cheeping peeping and making a ruckus. I don't remember my last 6 cemani chicks being this loud in my bathroom (I just finally cleaned it after the last 6 chicks!)

White bresse ship TODAY! So that will put me with a dozen bresse, a dozen cemani. 25 dp meaties of which 5 are roos. 10 in my laying flock. And we're still looking for 3 muscovy ducks to add next weekend. Then I promised no more chickens until spring to my bf. He gave me the chicken stare stinkeye.. he doesn't believe me either.

We're going to earthdog next weekend if my roos have been able to keep a lid on things, and or the caponizing equipment arrives, in which I guess we're going to rush headlong into learning how.

Then in a couple weeks, we'll be caponizing my cemani and haffie, the other cemani I have that is a roo is going to go for a decrowing surgery through byc member dretd who is a chicken vet that can do decrowing surgery if anyone is in need of it...

I will be picking my best white bresse and getting it decrowed also, the same will go for all my roos I breed with, the rest become capons. I'm only stressing about my 5 roos b/c caponizing equipment isn't here, my neighbors are ok with me farming in my urban area, but 6 roosters sing songing all day long, not happy neighbors. Semi-quieted or very muffled crowing is ok.

LOVE this weather! Nice break from the very warm Fall weather that we have been having, even up here in the clouds. I am still on the fence about whether or not to keep some of the quail through the Winter. They would be problematic to keep in the house (OH HECK NO!) and keeping them with the chickens is not recommended and so that leaves a separate area to bear proof. Another thing that I have discovered is that they are moisture producing critters, much more so than chickens. Their poos are very wet and right now they have a small dog dish to drink out of, walk through, and that does not help matters. I am not sure how to keep them healthy, safe and un-frostbitten in our weather/winds without building an entire new house for them. Maybe they should be a seasonal migratory bird up here..... still pondering

What do you use for bear proofing Mtn Margie? We are moving to a place that is most definitely in the bear zone. We are starting out with the birds in the garage until the under cover coop is built. Not supposed to have chickens according to the HOA but we are going to try under the radar as we have plenty space to keep it quiet and hopefully no-one will notice. I am guessing that electrified fencing is a must. I have seen bears get through a pretty tough barn wall and fencing!

I still tend to my chickens. I feed fermented food so I still go out every morning to feed. But now I just don't have to feel bad if I sleep in a little later than usual. And if I'm out to dinner or something when it gets dark, I don't have to worry about them getting locked up. I always go count them every night though just so I feel better. ;)
