Long story short, checked both hives, all is well with both and here's a shot of one of the queens.

alebuela,

I am glad they went to someone you know. I know you really care for the little orpington and now maybe she will have a bit more peace. I know I am looking forward to the bird swap coming up. My feed bill is getting out of hand. So many chickens lol.

Thanks, Babs. Of course I'm replacing them with 3 others, but the newbies are described as gentle, non-aggressive girls: a lemon cuckoo Orpington and a CCL from corancher, and a Welsummer from COChix. I think they'll do well with my original EE and BCM and my little chocolate Orp. Yay!!!!

Good luck to you and all others who have a bunch of chicklets to find homes for. I'm glad for Denver's restrictions on numbers - I can just imagine my enchantment with chicklets otherwise!

Babs,

If you need another reference, I can take a pic of the coop you sold me, which is outstanding! My girls love it!

It is all good thanks. If they want my help I am willing to volunteer my time and perhaps even bringing my own tools. I guess I have an obsession with being very busy.
Besides I am a sucker for building things for critters lol.
You are getting some really neat breeds there. I would love to see pics of the lemon cukoo orpington when you get her. I think that sounds like a neat looking bird.

I had to separate the polish from the rest of the young chickens. Poor Jennifer got her hair pulled out by someone. I made them a temporary place in the garden yesterday. Just a simple A frame to keep them in for 2 weeks until the swap. Not very predator proof but should suffice. They have protection from the weather and a place to sleep (saw horse, and Jennifers favorite little wooden box). They chose the box last night. Not sure they can see well enough to feel comfortable jumping up onto the saw horse. I put the younger sex links in with them and so far all is well. I am of course keeping the polish since Jennifer seems to have a hard time of it. They will have a 5x8 portion of the big coop and a 5x20 portion of the run.

LS,
I am glad to hear your bees are doing well. My neighbor lost all of his this year. He had 3 hives. One swarmed and was lost the other 2 he thinks suffocated from the snow building up on the hive. ( I had offered to make him stands for them last fall) Bums me out since I have planted things just to draw them to the yard. I really like watching them all busy on the flowers. I have seen a lot on the Salvia that I planted so somewhere there is a hive.
Since I cannot plant a garden yet I may make a place for sunflowers since they love those.

I have been out trying to get the grass that comes up in the flower beds under control. I feel like it is a losing battle. The grass is a kind that sends runners underground and shoots up again 10 feet away. If I wait for the ground to dry out I will never get even a portion of the root. I dislike using poisons on anything so it is all hand pulling. I have tried the commercial weed barrier and it just shoots up right through it. If anyone has a magical solution I am open to it. I did hear vinegar would kill some weeds but dang I don't want to kill the flowers too.

Well everyone enjoy this warm weather and have a great day,

Babs

So I got a little suspicious today when I was out in the run with the babies, the adults all became very interested in the coop. So I went and opened the lid to the nest box where the broody is and listened. Didn't hear anything, so I went out to feed and I saw her off the nest, so I ran to the eggs and checked, sure enough s pip from one of our blue eggs. So I jumped into gear and moved the nest into a dog crate and then showed mama where it went, she heard the pips and went right in. While I was moving the eggs, I saw two pips.

Also been hanging out with the littles each day in the run and they are super friendly, especially the white female. She almost always comes for a little lap time.

@21hens-incharge sorry about your little Jennifer.. the Polish are so cute. By the time my 2 birds left, Schocki, my chocolate Orp, had been pecked bald and scabbed on her head by those two. She hates the BluKote, but it works. I hope you can find and isolate the ones who are after Jennifer.

Will you be coming to the Denver swap this coming Saturday at Earth Dog Denver? There are many more people who want to raise chickens here in Denver, and you might be able to find good homes for your chicklets there. I have a neighbor just three houses down who has a beautiful coop and a bee hive in her very urban backyard, and practically every day someone asks about raising chickens. I can't keep a bee hive because of my B&B guests, but I'm putting in a lot more flowers so her bees will find a welcome.
