Whelp has free shipping, and they carry a meat bird for high altitude, it is a slow white broiler.  I found someone local to go in on an order, so if you want to go in on our order let me know.

My only hesitation is that welp is in iowa and this is one of the states that are hit hard with the avian flue. I would hate to expose the state to this issue at the moment. Not to mention my own birds.

True, did not think of the AI in Iowa.

I've been looking into meat birds too. have you guys tried cornish roaster? I've also been looking into "homemade" crosses since you can't breed cornish crosses, but all of the threads have beed dead for a while.

I would rinse the feet in water in case there is something irritating them that you cannot see. Give them a good looking over too. Not the usual behavior to do that.

Might be touched in the head. <<<<<<<<<<< Just kidding

Edited to add..........

How old is the chick?? If it is very young it could just be seeing the toes as little tasty looking worms.

I got 25 red broilers from Stromburgs and they are looking great. Growing fast and healthy.

The chick should quit trying to go for its feet as soon as it figures out where the food is. If not, ? that would be strange behavior so the rinsing and maybe spray some bluekot ?

he is about 3 days old. buff brahma so his feet have feathers and i think he has been trying to pluck them. and since they are all swollen and bloody he wants to pluck them even more. others are helping him too. i separated him for a little in a small container so that made him stop for a short time. then washed and i put him back with the rest. they are going to sleep so maybe he will leave them alone for now.
