@COChix: those are seriously good-lookin' chicks. It wasn't me who was concerned about which side of the fence they ended up on, but I'm happy to hear they are smart enough to look out for themselves, given their Mama (you) can't be with them all the time. My surprise Silkie hatch last year went all over the place, much of the time without their Mamas (they could exit the pen through the fence, but the adults could not). They hob-mobbed with males and females, bantams and LF alike, and the way I saw it, nobody cared or even paid attention. The LF surprise hatch was essentially the same, although the mama was not in a pen of any sort, and she maintained far better control of her chicks. Now I am wondering, though, if the the peaceful integrations happened because They weren't introductions and integrations at all; the chicks were members of the flock the moment they hatched. Or maybe the mamas have status and clout. Whatever. It is so nice to see that your introduced chicks are looking out for themselves and integrating so peacefully. That's an achievement, and your chicks are obviously a credit to the time and thought you've devoted to them. Don't you just love it when your critters make you right?!

Hey mountain peeps. Just got this in my mailbox after being chased in by the weather....

there is a major snowstorm lurking in the models for Thursday-Friday, perhaps half the size of the last big one, with considerable uncertainty. More on that in a PSA tomorrow. Meanwhile, we have a decent chance for snow through the afternoon that could result in about 3-6" by early evening (will hover around freezing, so may end up as slush on most roadways). And, yes, there is third course/storm that could hit us around Sunday.

My grass continues to be white.....

It is much colder down here today than yesterday. Had hail producing T-storms come through last night and before sun-up this morning. Smaller than pea sized and about 1" deep. Had to close the windows and put the heat back on for a bit. was sunny for a while, now mostly cloudy. Temps in the high 40s. Almost feels like being back in winter again... Stay dry you folks up high.

Thanks and I guess I had confused you with someone else. Oh well, so your observation about integration issues seems to confirm what I have seen. The sooner the adult birds are exposed to the chicks the easier transition seems to go, at least in our experience. Most of the adult birds don't really even pay attention to the chick.

My chicks made it through their first week & got to use my GSD/Shiba Inu mix dog's face as a playground for a little bit. The 4th chick to hatch did end up just having a very full crop for his tiny body & continues to make great progress. He almost flew out of the brooder box despite having what I call his "Finding Nemo wing" (one wing isn't quite right). Both eggs in the second batch ended up not making it, but the egg I stuck into the incubator last currently has an external pip & it's only day 18. Hoping the little dude makes it out because I'm very curious to see what it will look like since that's an egg from the two I hatched last year.

Even better, since getting netting up over the chicken yard, all the adult chickens & the peafowl have been coexisting together without any fights or injuries. I'm thankful that at least one thing is going in a positive direction in my life right now!

Congrats on your hatch and keeping fingers crossed for that last egg to hatch. Glad everyone is co-existing now with the netting.
