I'm not familiar with Metzer - Do they have chickens or just ducks? We can get two of the breeds we want just from our feed store, but they're not getting Marans in. Can I go in with you on that?

Metzer is just waterfowl. I have a friend that is raising all kinds of Marans here in Colorado. They got most of their birds from Ray Valentine. If you are interested, PM me and I will pass along their contact information.

Metzer is just waterfowl.

So if anyone wants ducks or geese, keep me in mind. I go on vacation the 24th. I want to order the first week in May.

corancher, I'd love info on the marans...I have been trying for awhile to find someone here selling chicks.

Hey Everyone!

Leadville, CO!

I just got home with 6 little chicks. 3 Rhode Island Reds and 3 Light Brahmas.

If anyone is also raising chicks in the high country (or specifically Leadville) let me know, I'm curious how it's going.

Thanks warmfuzzies! I'm really looking forward to seeing how they do. They seem perfect for up here and they are some really great looking birds (as you mentioned!). They are supposedly only 4-6 days old (I think maybe a bit more though) and I've got one Brahma that keeps puffing up and calling out every couple of minutes. I've got a sneaking suspicion that one is a "he"!

Hi all,

Karen from longmont (sort of) here.

Nice to meet everyone. I've only read a few pages so I don't know all of what is going on but I thought I'd pop in and say hi.

This is my first year with chickens. I've got five right now 2 Auracnas, 2 Cuckoo Marans and one brown leghorn. I got them all from the local feed store here in Longmont - wow what a fiasco that was! Hour long waits on both of the days that I went in.

So far it looks like I ended up with three roos even though the Marans are the only ones that were straight run. The Leghorn is getting a nice little comb at only three weeks old, just like the two Marans. Oh well. I'll see if someone will trade me for them, sell them outright or I'm having BBQ in a few months! If I could tell the lineage of the Marans I would probably breed them, seeing as how they are such a hot commodity, but I don't want to do that with questionable chickens.

Any way, Hi all. I look forward to meeting my Colorado neighbors!

Yep- It was Easter ... and it "is" chick season. Went to Big R today to pick up some chick starter/grower and they were completely out of it. Bought some scratch for the older kiddos (12 weeks now) and will have to check back next week. Have just enough chick feed to get the three 7 week olds through the weekend.

Who knew that stuff could actually sell out at a place like that! Hope they get some good weather so they can catch some outdoor grazing time. They'll be looking forward to those peanut butter sandwich scraps

from my daughter's lunch plate a bit more this weekend... especially with the cold weather coming in.

Woo hoo, how are our Coloradans today? Out of the way of this storm? I am getting hailed on right now, pretty vigorously too. I can hear the thunder and see East of us it's nasty bad. Shold just have rain and hail mix here...according to "Mike Madson" the weather guy. Hope he's right! Stay safe everyone. Chck in if you can hope you don't have too much damage!
