My grapes are nowhere near that, but they are coming along. Yours are beautiful. I have squashes doing well, last year I had some spaghetti squash that I had to kind of knock on the neighbors doors, leave them on the step and run. I had them coming out my ears. But the squirrels attack all my summer and zucchini, maybe deer got them, pretty sure it was squirrel. I have never had luck with tomatoes, but I will try again. And no greens have come up for me, except one patch of spinach. Do you reccommend one particular lettuce over another? How about other greens? Any in specific...specific variety of kale maybe? I am determined to turn my little garden into something spectacular. If it kills me! LOL.

I have grown a few different kind of lettace over the years. Romaine has always done the best! We usually have so much romaine lettace that we are eating salads everyday during the summer and still giving it away to friends and family.

Green leaf lettuce did great in my friend's garden last year. Mine is doing great right now. I also got some merlot lettuce in a seed swap and that is doing great. I bought a mesclun mix from Target and that is doing almost as good as the lettuce.

So my black seeded simpson and mesclun have a shot? I got butterhead also and it has sprouted....then flopped over pretty quick too.

I have broccoli that is stunning me with how well it's doing out there. Have any of you tried it too? Good results? I am going to just keep experimenting, i guess (the kids love trying new things), but I love hearing your suggestions and insight.
I am taking notes!

Glad to hear that your broccoli is doing well. I have wanted to try broccoli for years, but have never found anyone who grows it here. I think I might try it this year!

Hi
I just found this thread, I usually live on the waterfowl forum, actually I live Longmont. I have three ducks, including a broody runner who's been sitting on a dozen eggs like a real champ! I'm hoping for a hatch Memorial Day weekend! (BTW the eggs are fertilized, I got rid of the drakes a couple of days before my hen started sitting).

Speaking of brocolli, my cuciferus veggies usually grow really well, but before they are ready for harvest they get infested with aphids. One summer I had a bunch of beautiful cabbage, but when I harvested the first one I saw it was inedible for all those little bugs. Brocolli, same thing, although I can get away with kale. I didn't even try cuciferus veggies last year so then I found the aphids on our young apple tree. I applied a package of lady bugs and the aphids were gone in about a day, but I still don't have the courage to try using precious garden space for brocolli until I have a year with no aphids.

Today's looks like a great day to get caught up in the garden!

Worm in the broccoli can also be a problem. My girlfriend has vowed to never plant it again

I am hoping the DE I bought for the duck pen will do double duty in the garden. I saw some earwigs yesterday, so I sprinkled the ground by my lettuce.

I get a lot of some kind of tiny worm in my carrots and parsnips. I've moved them to a different bed this year. I wonder if the DE would help with that. I got DE for the garden last year although didn't use it because I wasn't sure how it would affect the ducks. Then I read about using edible DE for the ducks so I got some of that and have been using it myself. Boy are my fingernails getting long and strong! The garden is fenced off from the ducks this year pretty well so I'll try that old DE out there.
