Colorado

I just got 5 chicks. They are 5 days old today and up until yesterday were in a different home using different starter than I have.I've had them for about 16 hours and it seems they haven't figured out the whole feeder system thing. This am I put some starter in my hand and offered it to them that way and after just climbing around on my hand for 5 min 2 of them sort of pecked at the food, but not much. A bit of the food fell on the floor of the coop and a they all seemed to go after that. So, I finally just dumped the palm full of food on the floor and moved the feeder right next to the pile. Should I be doing anything different? Wishing I had taken a cup or two of feed from Becky to get them started on the new feeder. Am I just being a worry wart? I guess when they get hungry enough they will start pecking at stuff till they figure it out. Thoughts?

Should I "tease" them with some crumbled egg yolk in my hand and then put some egg in the feeder?
never mind. The pile of food on the floor next to the feeder seems to have done the trick! I knew I was worrying over nothing ; )

There is a farm animal rescue in the Springs. Can't remember what they are called but I am sure they would take your guy, especially if you happen to donate a bag or two of food with him.
Ah, found them! http://www.bfasfarm.org/. Black forest animal sanctuary

I'm glad they are eating for you now! When you picked them up I noticed them eating the pine shavings (because it's different than what they were on here) and I wonder if they just had filled up on it! These chicks seriously eat like pigs and are heavily motivated by their stomachs! I figured they would come around. :) So, I put their feeder up on a brick and while they still knock it out and try to scratch at it, they are wasting a significantly less amount! Thank you for that advice! I also stopped filling the mason jar and just fill the dish itself several times a day. These babies had me so confused last night! There are 11 of them and they are one week old today. I couldn't tell if they wanted heat or not! LOL No matter the temp (88-98) they were all curled up together as far away from the heat as possible! Being far away from the heat you would think they were too hot (no panting or wings spread) but being curled up, laying across each other, is acting cold. No matter what I did with the heat they stayed that way! Finally I figured they just wanted to sleep together and left the heat at 97 in case they wanted it. LOL By the way, if anyone is looking for chicks I have 7 one week old chicks to rehome; 4 Black Australorps and 3 Red Sex Links. $5 each. They have been fed organic starter from the very beginning. They are happy, healthy and very curious. Every time I check on them they stand up tall and crane their necks around to see me. It's adorable!

Just wanted to stop by and say hello to my Colorado peeps! I'm new to raising chickens 3 mounths into my first batch, and somewhat new here at BYC been lurking for sometime. What a great resource BYC has been for me! Now that I've found the Colorado thread I'm really finding some great information. Please keep up the good work, you've helped more than you know. Thanks!

Do you have a limit on how many roosters? I am afraid I have 4 and I don't know what to do with them. They are my pets and I want them to have good homes. They have not started crowing so I have been reluctant to post an ad on CL. I thought I had found a home for them on CL but now I am thinking that person was not going to keep them but take them to auction. This is stressful!

There is a bunch of posts on CL that that listing is not legit, that the person is then taking them to an auction.

Thanks sooo much!! I contacted them :) Hopefully they will get back to me soon!
I contacted them about Tiny, my Brahma roo, about a year ago. It took them about four days to respond. Not sure why, but given that they rescue horses and everything else too they may have been trying to help a bigger animal with issues. Anycase, it seems like a very busy place, so just a heads up.
