Anyone want a 6 week old EE cockerel? You can have him now to fertilize your eggs when he gets a bit older or I'll feed him for you till he's old enough to grace your best roasting pan.

What caused your sudden lack of optimism? If your EE is a Roo I will be a bit disappointed. One Roo I can understand because one was extra, but 2 Roos out of 16 is just too much! I hope your EE is just an early bloomer. :)

I got the chicks from Cackle Hatchery and health-wise they have been superior (knock on wood). With the exception of a Roo or two the whole thing went quite smoothly!

Last night 6 of my 5 1/2 week old babies were roosting! It was so cute! The other 5 still slept on the floor but I expect that won't last long. Yup, as I suspected, they are all on the roost tonight! :) Today one of my EE's hopped onto the chair with me so I put her on my lap and she snuggled in. This girl has been particularly stand-offish her whole life so this was huge! I petted her for several minutes and she closed her eyes and laid her head on my arm looking quite contented. Totally made my day. :)

Tracie, I am so sorry about your sick babies. :( I can't even imagine what I would do in your situation. :( I hope the vet can give you some answers and help with whatever you choose to do.

Well...1) posted pics on the "ot thread" and the "what sex is my ee thread" and out of the 7 replies 6 were "positive" it is a rooster and one was pretty sure 2) the guy who lives next door worked in a hatchery for 15 years...he says roo 3) he is herding the hens 4) he has super thick legs and you can feel the bumps for spurs ( that comes from my stepson's dad so take it for what it's worth ; ) 5) I've just got a feeling 6) all indications of posture say he 6) he's long and lanky while all others are squat and round 7)all that said I'm not positive, but where I live i can't have a crowing rooster for a month while I try and rehome him...preemptive strike I guess.

I am feeling so much better. Still kinda sore...but I'm not yellow anymore.

We raised our rooster from an egg (waiting for a crow to verify he is a he

). He is 12 weeks.
We got our older girls from a farm in monument. They too our 12 weeks. We have had them 3 weeks.
Finally our babies are the ones that are sick 2 of the 4 have swollen eyes, 3 have runny nose and all 4 are sneezy. They are 6/7 weeks old. We have had them two weeks. We got them from a farm south of Pueblo.
Am looking forward to seeing the vet (wonder how much that is going to cost)?
YOu guys recommended Dublin Vet but I also see that Pikes Peak vet on union says they do chickens. Has anyone used them? Does anyone have idea on prices at either for the check, antibiotics, and then vaccine for everybody?
Thanks all!!!
Tracie

Everything that I have read about coryza says that incubation is 2-3 days with whole flock infection within 10. I've never used either so am not sure what their prices are. I think I called once and it was 30$. Just let us know what the outcome is.

Just got home from picking up 9 bales of old nasty hay that our friend's horse wouldn't eat. But the chickens LOVE it! Nice moldy and mildewy hay to scratch through and find bugs!
Please check into the moldy hay. Chickens are really susceptible to lung problems and mold is real hard to treat them for. I know we were told on here to avoid all mold as it was dangerous for the birds........

What an evening. I finished two more roosting areas for the gals/roosters (so far, I have 5 that are crowing but still too skinny with numerous more still not at the stage yet to know for sure) and cleaned the coop floor. It was quite horrendous getting them all settled in. There was so much confusion over where to roost and where to go. I didn't take pictures, perhaps tomorrow. But I ran out of nails or would have done more. Perhaps tomorrow I'll run and get more nails and finish everything else up. I'd like to do some prettier nest boxes next. I took out the water for the night to give the floor a chance to dry. Tomorrow, I'll do the Oxine preventative treatment for 3 days just in case I stirred up some crud with the cleaning. I'm always amazed at how much dust/dirt buildup there is.

Should have known when we named a hen Bo it was going to turn out to be a guy. Putting him on CL tonight.

I'm really surprised none of my boy named chicks turned into boys. In the original batch there was Pascal and Flynn. Then we had Spock and Kirk, and Ruler and Picard in the littles. In the minis we have Joss and Wil, but they got named right before they started laying eggs.
