I have a white Polish chick that I'm considering tinting for Easter. Everyone in my world already thinks I'm crazy. I dressed my d'Uccles for my Christmas card pic, and told my sis about putting sandals on a chick with curled toes.
Dyed chicks wouldn't surprise anyone at all

whether it hurts them or not i think its sad....and on top of that its encouraging people who know nothing about chickens to buy them to stuff in their childrens easter baskets and God only knows what happens after that.

My kids were bored with the green clothes, foods etc on St Patricks day, so I had to do something to surprise them. My 15 yr old son had to take pics and put on his myspace cause he thought it was cool. They want me to keep enough white Silkies so I can paint them each a color for different holidays. Suppose they will want a red, white and blue one for July 4th

A Polish would look so cute! You could make it tye-dyed with Springy colors. Patches of light blue, light green, pink, orange, yellow, etc lol.

Personally, I think a neon colored chick is plain UGLY and a crime against nature. Add that to the erroneous connection with the resurrection of the Savior and it's triple the insult. JMHO. I've seen the ones from Ideal in person.....triple disgusting to me. Kids are in fantasy land way too much-they probably believe neon green is a natural color for a bird. So, that's my $10 (inflation).

I just don't understand, why would it be sad? It doesn't hurt them, its not permanent, they don't get ridiculed by other chickens out in the run.

Most of the chicks that are sold colored are in places where someone would really have to go looking for them, like hatcheries. The odds of someone in downtown Baltimore (or wherever) finding chicks and then not knowing what to do with them later probably doesn't happen very much. With things like Craigslist, Freecycle and other internet sites, people can find homes for unwanted chicks/chickens/ducks without much trouble these days.

Plus with the boom of backyard chickens now, I doubt many people would buy the colored chicks and not know how to raise them.

I know they have been dying chicks and ducks since I was 7 (1977), because my cousins and I got pink, blue and green ones for Easter. We kept them til we had to move and they were gladly accepted by a farmer down the road.

To me, temporary tinted feathers seems a lot more fun and cute, than permanent naked necks, frizzled feathers and all the new stuff being bred. But to each his own.

"No poultry younger than four weeks of age may be sold, given away, or otherwise distributed to any person in lots of less than six."

??? Sounds like OH's not a very chicken friendly state.
